I had to go back and check on this! How did we never do the '50s, after such great drafts of the 60s, 70s and 80s?

AI think it was between fifties and a redo of the entire 2000's, and you know what won out.

I'd be down for a 50s draft or a redo of the 70s draft (which I missed).

Yeah, the conversation was between the 50s and 2000s. I would much rather do a draft we haven't done, instead of repeating one we have done. So our possible slate for the 2015 Draft Season looks to include:

1950s

Death Drafts

Wizard of Oz

1970s

Aliens

Thing about Drafts is the more you do them, the more devalued they become. If you're asking me, I say the next one is in like February at the earliest. Maybe just play some Knock Outs in the mean time. Everyone gets a little busier this time of year anyway.

Gotta agree with Arjen on all points.  The drafts are losing their 'event' status...that's not good.  Let's chill for a few months and pick back up next year.

I'll run the next one and will promote it on the main page and social media venues as well.

ASweeeeeeeeet.

What drafts pique your interest?

1. Asian Cowgirl.

AI hurt my back the last time I tried that posit-

Never mind.

Will see. I may go back to the old school stuff. I did the first draft in 1999. May have to dig.

Agreed.  Holidays are a bad time for drafts.

My guess is that Nick will want to do something closer to a straight decade or genre draft than any of the more elaborate concepts that get bandied about, but some thoughts for later options that which I think haven't been done but don't stray into overly-esoteric territory (which is why I can't muster enthusiasm for casting drafts, which are all about the minutia of a particular film):

TV Shows - Self explanatory, and lends itself to themes that are simple enough to remain competitive with the general population.

Romcoms - It's a big genre, but one that might require stretching many of our horizons.

Couples -  On a similar note, this could be fun. So long as we promise no more than 3 lists with the theme of ostensibly platonic Sherlock/Watson, Butch/Sundance combos.  I was also kicking around an idea of teams as more of a KO topic.

Franchises - I think this could be interesting, though we'd need to clarified as to whether we were taking the entries as is or with a focus on the overall strength of the core concept (i.e., are we drafting the existing library, or the IP itself)

I always resisted the idea of a franchise draft because there are just not enough great ones to go around.  But the idea of drafting IPs would be a fun twist, and would greatly expand the pool.

I'd say that it really depends on how we define "franchise".  My suggestion would be anything with 3+ entries in a single medium, but then you also have issues with spinoffs and whether, say, Marvel as a whole is a single franchise or that each team/hero is their own branch.  Also whether spin-offs count as separate (i.e., does Angel go along with Buffy?).  Horror franchises alone could fill quite at a few drafts, without getting into superhero, mystery, sci-fi, or action possibilities.

Honestly, while I think I like that one the least of the options I mentioned, I don't think the lack of out-and-out "greats" is such a problem.  That's where the competitive aspect comes in, sweating trying to get a couple of genuine favorites in before you get stuck holding the Care Bears.

"Douchebag Draft", but only if I get to draft Farva in the first round.

Finally, a draft where picking Carter Burke would be a brilliant tactical move!

Anyone up for a "superband - living or dead" draft?  For some reason that's been on my mind lately.

I tried doing this years ago and it never took off.  I'd be totally up for it if you can make it work, though.

I was kicking around a couple ideas that had some overlap, but hadn't quite figured them out yet - Franchises and/or Teams.  I figure for Franchises we'd need to start by specifying non-horror, and that it has to have at least 4 entries, just to get things in the ballpark of manageable.  For teams, I have a lot of possible candidates, but haven't settled on a definition.  I think you need to specify non-sports, so that every sports movie ever made doesn't independently qualify, and that it has to constitute more than 3 people at least.  But from there, you also need to define some sort of common goal that unifies the group and separates them from a general ensemble, or a family (I'm not sure the Brady Bunch or Royal Tennenbaums, for example, should count).  If anyone has thoughts, I'd like to hear them.

ETA:  I was thinking of this in terms of KOs only, but it occurs to me that a Franchise Draft could actually work pretty well.  Could throw it open to horror as well, in that case.

Some movies that we haven't tackled yet that could be fun:

DIE HARD - John McClane, Holly Gennaro, Hans Gruber, Al Powell, Dwayne T. Robinson, Dick Thornberg, Harry Ellis, Karl, Argyle, Bonus Pick.

BLADE RUNNER - Deckard, Rachel, Roy, Leon, Pris, Zhora, Tyrell, Sebastian, Gaff, Bonus Pick

SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT - Bandit, Sheriff Buford T. Justice, Carrie, Cledus, Junior, Big Enos, Little Enos, 3 Bonus Picks

One thing nice about the BLADE RUNNER draft idea: even without doing a gender swap, you'd have a bunch of female roles to cast.  That makes a nice change from the usual sausage fests that we end up casting.

Yes.
AI'm liking Blade Runner. I'm liking Dune for a "two-picks-a-day" draft.

Blade Runner or Die Hard would be fun.  And Blade Runner you could easily do "Two a day" and have the drafting part done in a week.

You could do the 'two a day' on any of them.  Whatever is chosen, I think it's been proven that it's best to get them done in one week.  Week 2 loses all momentum and interest wanes for almost all participants.

AI'm down with Dune.

Hell, make it three picks a day.

DUNE: Paul Atreides, Leto Atreides, Dr. Yueh, Duncan Idaho, Feyd Rautha, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, Lady Jessica, Chani, Gurney Halleck, Thufir Hawat, Piter De Vries, The Emperor, Irulan, Stilgar, Reverend Mother, Rabban, Dr. Kynes

That's 16 we could draft.  We could reduce that to 14 and a bonus pick pretty easily.

AKA the Who Gets First Pick and Takes McConnoughey Draft.

Having just recently watched bits of both Dune adaptations, I'd be down with that one.

AAny other ideas for a non-casting draft?

Think we could handle a 3-a-day draft?  It'd be tight.
