Hard for Peter Jackson to match LOTR in my book - yet this might do it.

  Holiday Season Double Bills
Posted by: Fat Elvis - 11-26-2018, 10:28 PM - Forum: Movie Miscellany - Replies (13)

Just came across this tweet, and it had me thinking of my own seasonal faves to program together:

some holiday season double bills [Image: 1f378.png] MORVERN CALLAR // THE HOLIDAY PHANTOM THREAD // THE PASSIONATE FRIENDS THE FAMILY STONE // A CHRISTMAS TALE EYES WIDE SHUT // METROPOLITAN BAD TIMING // ABOUT TIME CAROL // BELL BOOK AND CANDLE THE APARTMENT // BRIDGET JONES’S DIARY

https://twitter.com/hillcake/status/1066853812013580288

My perfect double features:

NATIONAL LAMPOON'S CHRISTMAS VACATION + SCROOGED

DIE HARD + LW and/or DIE HARD + THE SILENT PARTNER

THE SURE THING + LESS THAN ZERO

GREMLINS + KRAMPUS

WE'RE NO ANGELS (original) + TRAPPED IN PARADISE

THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT + KISS KISS BANG BANG

All suggestions appreciated for other fun combinations.

BLAST OF SILENCE, THE ICE HARVEST are ones I watch every year, but I'm never sure what to pair them with. (hmmmmm REINDEER GAMES might play with HARVEST....or DAD SANTA)

I've never done this one, but HOLLIDAY AFFAIR + BISHOP'S WIFE might be cool.

  The Favourite (2018) Discussion
Posted by: WilderHackman - 11-24-2018, 07:16 PM - Forum: Focused Film Discussion - Replies (9)

This movie is wonderful! Forgive me for comparing anything to Kubrick, but this movie is very close to being a leaner, meaner and female-led version of Barry Lyndon. Olivia Colman is going to ascend Hollywood with this performance. It's a star-making turn. Weisz and Stone are reliably excellent as usual.

Finally, Nicolas Hoult of all people fucking rules in this movie as a hilariously smug fop. He never particularly stood out to me in the past, but he damn near steals every scene he's in.

I get that he's not everyone's cup of tea and art is subjective and people are entitled to their opinions and all that good wholesome shit, but I actually want to fight people who don't like Yorgos Lanthimos.

Favorite Film(s) of the 10's: Year By Year
Posted by: Fat Elvis - 11-23-2018, 02:39 PM - Forum: Movie Miscellany - Replies (331)

A Twitter Q making the rounds: "what is all of you guys’ favorite films of each year in the 2010’s?"

We did a draft not long ago, but it still might be fun to see where our own tastes lie limiting to 1 film a year (that's the discipline); what film(s) we stand together on and which film(s) perhaps some of us are out on a ledge on.

Just scanning 2010 Wikipedia a few films are falling stars for me - THE TOWN, 127 HOURS, GET LOW, THE KILLER INSIDE ME, GREEN ZONE- while others are still rising - BLACK SWAN, BOOK OF ELI, MACGRUBER, SCOTT PILGRIM, SHUTTER ISLAND -I revisit those quite a lot.

This could be difficult.

It's about to start, and I actually get to experience this one!

Anyone diving in with me?

This Thanksgiving, streaming live on Shudder TV, feast on a selection of “deadly dinner” films picked by the world’s foremost (and possibly only) drive-in movie critic. Live marathon airs in US only.
