Wouldn't it make more sense to build a mech that has guns for arms rather than have them walk around carrying rifles that can easily get knocked out of their hands?

It wouled look anime-ish, and impractical if guns get fucked...unless they made them arm mounted guns, and still keep hands for CQC
Guess cameron just went with the "evolution of exoesqueleton" technology look.

- alex riviello - 01-18-2010

I don't see why they couldn't mold different kinds of arms for specific tasks. You're going to war, you put on some damn chaingun arms.

Yeah, but i think saying Stephen Lang losing a battle in a mech with two ol painless for arms is pushing suspension of disbelief too far.

- Richard Dickson - 01-18-2010

Seems like it would be cheaper to build a mech with hands that can do multiple things than to build multiple specialized arms that you have to remove and switch out. If the arm guns run out of ammo, you can't just pick up something else, you have to go back to base, have them taken off, and have your sword arms or whatever put back on.

The mechs were also used for lifting and other "hands-on" tasks, so giving them regular hands makes sense.

- rourkefan - 01-18-2010

In like the mechs because they bring me hope of a live action Exosquad movie.

Okay, I have to say it. Why is hollywood pushing 3-D down my throat? Is it piracy? I don't get the headaches watching real 3-D that I did with Rodriquez's Spy Kids movie, but it still sucks.

- rourkefan - 01-18-2010

The only thing that I like about 3-D is that it lends itself to longer and steader shots. A Michael Bay edited film with a Greengrass shaky-cam would be terrible in 3-D.

Yes it would, but what happens when you have to climb some rocks an' shit? The nice thing about the human body analogy is that its versatile... Or, sorta what Dickson said.

Though, chaingun arms are rad.

I find my head hurts with live action 3D, but not with CGI 3D. The live action parts in Avatar was a big improvement though.

Sorry, but chaingun arms mechs are un-american, guys:

I predict that once this overtakes Titanic financially, then wins Best Picture and probably Best Director, 99% of film geeks will never admit to ever having enjoyed it.

- Richard Dickson - 01-18-2010

The brief clips they showed during the Golden Globes last night looked just fine on my non-3D TV. I think it has a chance of holding up on DVD.

- danko - 01-18-2010

The AMP is not necessarily a weapon anyway.
It's a general purpose TOOL. It amplifies movement, down to the single digits.
It's only logical to use it with whatever other useful tool, depending on the work to do.
Remember, technically the corporation is on Pandora to extract, not to kill.

Well I don't worry too much. I think I'll like the movie anyway, and sooner or later I'll catch up with a 3D home projector I guess...

The difference here is that AVATAR is not so obviously vagina powered, so I'm certain that post possible Oscar win, that this thing will still be propped up as some kind of geek gold standard.

Jim Cameron, murderer.

Its the Fox News style of journalism; its like playing 6 hundred degrees of separation.

The baby names "Neytiri", "Toruk", and "Pandora" have all become wildly popular since the film's release, according to today's UK press. Goddammit Galactus, you're never around when you're nedded.

Now that's a Game Changer!

Actually not really. Sounds like some of the "made up" names of black babies and/or strippers.

"DeJakesully, get your ass in the house!"

White people come up with retarded name too.... If I never see another unique spelling of Brittany it will be too soon.

I am blessed to have a nice, classy (and traditionally spelled) biblical name*

*Though I went through a phase where I wanted to be named "Ariel" after the Mermaid... I outgrew that though, thank god.

Dumb...bear?

PS I'm going to see the movie again on Thursday. The theater that had the fire apparently cleaned any damage, so I'm good to go!

Hustler is making a porn Avatar spoof, Empire magazine dares you to come up with a better name for it.

Fresh from making This Ain't Star Trek XXX, Hustler has announced This Ain't Avatar XXX, another porn parody. While blue body-paint and sex are an intriguing combination, the title is weak. So Empire Magazine has asked you to suggest alternatives.

Empire put out the call for better titles via Twitter. So far, the best contenders are:

Avatar: Pandora's Box
Avatar: I Blue Myself
Av At Arse
Ave It 'Ard
Tree Of Holes

3 and 5 are great.

From the LA Times:

Reporting from Los Angeles and Beijing - "Avatar" may be too popular for its own good in China.

The communist nation's state-run movie distributor, China Film Group, unexpectedly began pulling the blockbuster science-fiction picture from 1,628 2-D screens this week in favor of a biography of the ancient philosopher Confucius.
