If you watch the special features on the blu-ray there are some clips from the movie in HD at the proper brightness and it looks great. It's a genuine mystery how they fucked up the transfer on the 2D disc so badly. The 3D disc is better, but due to how contrast-y the night scenes are the ghosting is really bad (though my TV is five years old and starting to show some other weird chromatic problems in its blacks, so that's probably contributing).

- muzman - 08-19-2015

What this and the Sony examples looks like is people just screwing up which colour space they are using.  Somehow no one noticed that the whole office is still on Apple Gamma or something, even the test monitor.  "Hey, it looks great.  Get that master off for replication"

Seems a little hard to imagine that a professional authoring house could do something like this, but nothing would surprise me.

Apparently the problem is the transfer, not the film itself.  I let my son rewatch the final battle again recently and I had to turn up the brightness, again, in an attempt to simply make the action on the screen visible.

Awww man that poor petition.

Then sign the petition.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

- fraid uh noman - 08-19-2015

AThe transfer never bothered me though lol. That's what the petitions for, right? I guess I have my TV set bright enough..

ACaught most of this on HBO. Pretty dull.

AI'm wearing a Godzilla shirt today. But even so, this is a one-and-done movie.

WHAT IS THIS, 4CHAN?!!

- bradito - 08-19-2015

AIf it had Mothra and Rodan, I'd own the dimly-lit Blu.

- Nooj - 08-19-2015

Aeheheheh

- MichaelM - 08-19-2015

Technically speaking, Mothra was in it.

- Nooj - 08-19-2015

Aso joyous at the sight of crumbs posing as table scraps...

- MichaelM - 08-19-2015

I actually don't like Mothra and am wondering how the hell they're going to make it into an effective cinematic foe for Godzilla.

- Nooj - 08-19-2015

AIt's ok. We're not gonna be able to see any of it anyway.

- bradito - 08-19-2015

AIt'll be a grimdark butterfly.

- stevehauk - 08-19-2015

It's a MOTH not a butterfly..

- bradito - 08-19-2015

ANevertheless, I'm still starting a band called Grimdark Butterfly!

- Nooj - 08-19-2015

no one would suspect it!

Mothra was always the lamest Kaiju EXCEPT  in the delightfully bonkers Godzilla; Tokyo SOS. He (or she?) is actually pretty damn cool, the only time this happens. IN MOOBIES ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!

For your band to be successful it needs fronted by two Japanese women singing in harmony.

Mothra's best performance is in Godzilla Mothra King Ghidorah. She shows a lot of heart when fighting Godzilla. She never does anything more than annoy him, but I do appreciate the effort.

- bradito - 08-20-2015

AMothra's a girl?

/Mothra stuff you only just realized

- stelios - 08-20-2015

So that means Godzilla beats up women. No wonder nerds love him so much.

In Ghidorah the Three-Headed monster, at least in the English dub, the fairies of Monster Island repeatedly refer to Mothra as "he."  Other "Mothras" may have been female, presumably, as at least one of them laid an egg (Godzilla v. Mothra).

A
It is absolutely the transfer.

No major film should require adjustment of the settings for basic watchability.

Now, Dullzilla wasn't a SONY release... but this does show that certain studio releases get messed with for home video:

http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=257809

I definitely noticed how dark the blu-ray for FURY was.  People are saying that the transfer for the digital download versions were not affected by this.
I just finished re-watching this all the way through for the first time since the theater (still love it btw...but that's another argument for another day)...and I gotta be honest. At no point did I understand what the hullabaloo over it being too dark was all about. I viewed the 2D blu ray on a 46 inch Sony Bravia that's just a couple years old. I don't use any of the factory settings. Got it set the way I prefer it pretty specifically (brightness a little down...colors a little up...maxed out sharpness and contrast. Maybe not ZT60 quality *snicker* but the blacks are pretty damn inky and deep on the brightest of movies). Anyway, it IS a dark movie but at no time did I feel dissatisfied with what I was seeing or feel that I was missing anything due to it being TOO dark. So...what AM I missing?

- Nooj - 08-28-2015

Maybe that's just how you like the movie?
