Someone did the (monster) math and Godzilla's actually on screen in this 2 Hour motion picture for a grand total of 8 minutes!

"Combined, all of Jurassic Park's CG dinos have just 6 minutes of screen time, while total dinosaur effects shots make up only 14 minutes of the 127 minute film."

And there were a hell of a lot more monsters running around Isla Nublar than in Godzilla. Course, Ian Malcolm does acknowledge their coyness.

See also: Jaws (for low monster ratio)

All in the execution. Suspense, build-up, awe, impact, etc.

I think the rubber suited Japanese franchise has us spoiled with extended clear fights. Theyre WWE Smackdowns with Kaiju. 2014 was more of a throwback. If the main character were more interesting, we'd be having a different convo.

A
Still love this movie. Doing a FB thread on the best trailers from the last ten years and this one definitely belongs.
Please post it here too? And while you're at it, make it eleven years, because Batman Begins (2005) also deserves a nod.

- fraid uh noman - 08-14-2016

ATerminator Salvation had the best goddamn trailer I've EVER seen.

Whoever put that thing together was a crook..

- chaz - 08-14-2016

What I liked about the trailer for Godzilla was that it saved all the great material for the actually viewing experience. Showing just enough of Godzilla to let the audience know this wouldn't be another GINO fiasco was a good idea too.

And there in, lies the rub. Jaws and Jurassic Park can get by without showing so much of the monsters because A) Spielberg is the fucking master and, more importantly B) The main characters are engaging, interesting and people you WANT to follow around!  The problem with Godzilla is that those same 8 minutes are the 8 minutes I am most engaged and enjoying the movie. Because everything else in the remaining Hour and 53 Minutes leaves me feeling 'meh'. That's the difference between a great Monster flick...and Dullzilla. Hell...some of the best scenes in either of those movies have the monsters nowhere near them (The Indianapolis speech and the electric fence scene respectively) because those are focused on the characters and highlight their motivations or arcs (Again, Quint's hatred of Sharks and Alan growing to care for the kids respectively). I can honestly not recall a similar scene anywhere to be found in this one. The movie introduces aspects that could have been better explored...like Brody not spending more time with his son as a reflection of his relationship with Cranston and their whole estranged relationship actually.  But just like the bomb disposal thing it introduces these things and just does nothing with them. Preferring to spend the screen time showing Brody just react to destruction or having Ken Watanabe and David Straitharn spout exposition while Sally Hawkins looks concerned in the background.

Ayes good

Pretty much. Cant argue with any of this. Still REALLY fond of those monster mins.

- fraid uh noman - 08-16-2016

AI will never not love this movie, if for no other reason than all of the painterly, gargantuan "people ain't shit compared to nature's wrath" images that it conjures up..

- chaz - 08-17-2016

While Godzilla is only in it for 15 minutes, he makes every second count and then some!

- Nooj - 08-22-2016

Unrelated to the movie, I was watching this segment on LAST WEEK TONIGHT:

And once it got to actually showing Lochte speaking (which I had yet to see in all the hubbub about his antics in Rio), I IMMEDIATELY had a sense of familiarity!

- headless fett - 10-21-2016

So not only does look like Michael Doughtery (TRICK 'R TREAT/KRAMPUS) is going to be working on the screenplay but it sounds like he'll be directing GODZILLA 2 as well! I am beyond thrilled with this news.

Directing I'm down, screenplay...shrug. I don't remember Trick 'r Treat particularly well, but Krampus looked and sounded amazing even if everything else was sort of...eh.

TRICK `R TREAT is one of the best Halloween anthology movies to come along in a long time. It`s excellent. KRAMPUS is now my 2nd favorite Christmas monster movie after GREMLINS. So much macabre fun to be had.

Doughtery doing a giant monster flick? Yes please!

- mojj - 10-21-2016

El Mayimbe is denying the report, and the article where the information came from has some strange info (Edwards' Godzilla 2 never hinted at MechaGodzilla). Whether it's true or not? Eh, not a particularly inspiring choice, but at this point I only really care where they're taking the Shin series. I don't care for seeing King Ghidorah or Mothra for the x1000 time.

- Nooj - 10-21-2016

Afun choice!

- chaz - 10-21-2016

I thought Krampus was awesome, so I'm good with the choice.

- waaaaaaaalt - 10-21-2016

Hey maybe Godzilla won't live in the fucking darkness this time.

- Overlord - 10-23-2016

AThe Blu Ray transfer of Godzilla 2014 was way too dark.

- d.t. - 09-07-2017

ANah, it's best not to.

What did you think, dude?

- Nooj - 09-07-2017

Very, very nice monsterfights.

Needed more Watanabe though.

That was my favourite relationship in the movie.

- MichaelM - 09-07-2017

I still get giddy seeing Big G fire up his atomic breath. The first use, especially, in the film, is fucking SWEET.

- Bucho - 09-07-2017

AIt's really beautifully done, the way it builds gradually from the blue light appearing suddenly on Ford's face as he's being confronted by Mama MUTO, to the good old crawl from the tip of his tail up his spine. Everything about the monsters came off beautifully. The only time I felt like the effects were a little dodge was in the flood scene, with the water swamping the city.

The solution is to use the 3D disc but turn off the 3D, then you can see everything fine. That's all I have folks, bye!

- d.t. - 09-07-2017

I love this movie, unabashedly.
