It's all at the top of this radio interview:

I know it's all PR hype verbiage, but it does make me smile to hear Spielberg lead off with "It's gonna be really great!" I think he really does know what his task with this movie is.

INDIANA JONES AND THE LORD OF SUMMERISLE

I been an Indy fan since childhood, and yet im more excited about Spielberg confirming a Tintin sequel is coming than this movie being his next project

RE: INDIANA JONES and you're actually fucking serious pre-release discussion - fatherdude - 03-26-2018

But Spielberg was never planning on making TINTIN 2. It was always supposed to be Peter Jackson directing that one, with Spielberg producing.

Yes, but I was talking about Spielberg confirming its coming anyway.
And he is still involved, and directed the first one.
Those news are bigger for me than an Indy V, and im a massive Indy fan.

Yes!

I would also accept Indiana Jones and the Seven Golden Vampires.

I kind of want him to sport a Henry Sr. style hat in his domestic scenes. It would be a lot better and more subtle tribute than that awkward push in on a set photo. Plus it's not without precedent for him to wear a different hat ie the gray fedora.

RE: INDIANA JONES and you're actually fucking serious pre-release discussion - fatherdude - 03-28-2018

I say scratch the domestic scenes. A significant amount of CRYSTAL SKULL took place in the U.S. Time to pull a TEMPLE OF DOOM and keep us overseas from frame one.

I'd be okay with this. I don't particularly need to see Marion (or Jim Broadbent's Marcus Brody stand-in) again.

RE: INDIANA JONES and you're actually fucking serious pre-release discussion - history buff - 03-30-2018

If its the 1960s who's going to be the villian? The Russians being the badies in Crystal Skull was so awful and stupid I hope thy don't go that route again. Maybe Indy can face off against some Hippies protesting the Vietnam War; as he's gotten older Indy has clearly gotten more conservative.

RE: INDIANA JONES and you're actually fucking serious pre-release discussion - Belloq87 - 03-30-2018

There was a good way to do Soviet heavies. CRYSTAL SKULL didn't do that, and I think they would be leery about going back to that well.

I'm expecting a villain who is along the lines of an eccentric and independently wealthy kook who can afford to pay a small army of henchmen.

Or perhaps the religious/quasi-religious cult angle.

RE: INDIANA JONES and you're actually fucking serious pre-release discussion - ravi - 03-31-2018

Yeah I was OK with the Soviets as villains in Indy 4. I just felt they didn't execute them as well as they could have. They came across as second rate versions of the Nazis with different accents and costumes. Cate Blanchett did what she could with her character, but the whole race between Indy and Spalko lacks suspense.

Even if Last Crusade brought the Nazis back, they did new things with them like Elsa's complicated relations with both Jones men, Vogel's more physical threat, bringing them out in full force (with a funny cameo by Hitler) and having the Cruciform Sword soldiers intervene. There was still some sense of urgency and something important at stake.

As for possible villains in this 60's story, I think maybe a SPECTRE-ish organization could be cool. It would be a nice way to tie into the series's Bondian roots for a final adventure.

A female Indiana Jones?
I've been and Indy fan since childhood, and I love this idea.
Make her Indy's granddaughter, send her into an adventure with grandpa, and have her earn the hat, whip and nickname.
Hell, it would actually fit the canon perfectly; make her Mutt's young daughter, and have her be the Indy of the late 70s and onward.
Plus, the "Indy and her granddaughter run pass a Star Wars poster, and she does a double take from Han Solo to grandpa" writes itself.

RE: INDIANA JONES and you're actually fucking serious pre-release discussion - Belloq87 - 04-05-2018

If the Indy series must in some way continue beyond V (and the fact that Disney bought it presumably not to just let the property sit on a shelf after one movie indicates it will), I'd be totally okay with spinning off to focus on a different character, and if that takes the form of a woman, terrific.

I don't think I would be okay with "rebooting" the actual Indiana Jones character to be a woman.

RE: INDIANA JONES and you're actually fucking serious pre-release discussion - thecooleravian - 04-05-2018

Who cares about 'Indiana Jones' after the sixties roll around? By then, the pulps have well and truly given way to Mack Bolan stuff--it seems to me no one in that era would give a fig about 'deepest, darkest Africa.' And you really can't replace Nazis and ancient tombs with crystals and the Bermuda Triangle. That stuff just hasn't aged nearly as well.

Plus, I don't want Harrison Ford's last time at bat to be some backdoor pilot for The New Adventures of Indiana Jones. They tried that with Mutt and we, as a civilization, already said no.

RE: INDIANA JONES and you're actually fucking serious pre-release discussion - Reasor - 04-05-2018

The franchise already made a half-assed attempt to switch genres to match the progression of time, and now they're wanting a new lead character. Fine, make that movie, but there's no reason to attach it to the Indiana Jones brand at that point. Let the new thing stand on its own feet or fail.

RE: INDIANA JONES and you're actually fucking serious pre-release discussion - arjen rudd - 04-05-2018

I kind of expect a safe return to Raiders-y stuff, much like Last Crusade after Temple of Doom. Maybe some Argentina Nazis show up.

RE: INDIANA JONES and you're actually fucking serious pre-release discussion - Belloq87 - 04-05-2018

Whoever the villains end up being, I hope Spielberg lets Indy kill some of them this time. I think THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN might have had a higher body count than CRYSTAL SKULL did, and that's not right.

Indiana Jones is a male power fantasy, full stop. That's the appeal of the character, like James Bond.

Switch the character to female and you break the formula.

That's...kind of an odd specific take on it, given that Indy frequently gets the crap kicked out of him (Raiders even straight-up drops him into a fight with a man-bear he stands no chance against,) wins through cunning more often than brute strength (again, that hulk at the airfield in Raiders,) and in half his movies has essentially no agency for most of the climax. "A male power fantasy" doesn't sit there tied to a post trying not to watch as God melts Nazi heads across the way.

Now, I'd agree that trying to spinoffrebootquel the series is a bad idea for...basically all of the reasons. And trying to do it with a female lead is just going to end up with comparisons to one incarnation or another of Tomb Raider (though it's not like that's a stunningly high bar to clear, so...) But the basic idea of pairing Indy up with a granddaughter sidekick I kinda like, not least because it means the film could have a leading lady he doesn't hook up with for once.

RE: INDIANA JONES and you're actually fucking serious pre-release discussion - bartleby_scriven - 04-05-2018

Yeah, if Indy is a response to James Bond, it purposefully subverts his physicality as well as his luck with women. Indy falls asleep when things are getting racy with Marion, stumbles into a secret passage instead of going to bed with Willie, and is basically seduced by Elsa as a blatant distraction from her room having been ransacked.

RE: INDIANA JONES and you're actually fucking serious pre-release discussion - Reasor - 04-05-2018

Indiana Jones' superpower is that he's better at mansplaining other cultures to the women in his life than his male antagonists are.

RE: INDIANA JONES and you're actually fucking serious pre-release discussion - Paul C - 04-05-2018

Yeah ‘power fantasy’ doesn’t quite ring true to me. Bond’s a guy who can have every woman he meets, and give him any weapon or vehicle you can think of and he’ll flamboyantly dispatch the baddies with it.

With Indy it’s a little bit more subtle, the fun comes less from him being hyper competant in all things and more from him being just canny enough to get through each ordeal by the skin of his teeth. If he has a superpower it’s having infinite knowledge of ancient lore.

RE: INDIANA JONES and you're actually fucking serious pre-release discussion - Amos - 04-05-2018

Only privileged powerful men flew around on airplanes in the 1930s, going on expeditions.

His other super power in addition to his knowledge of history is being born a straight, white man in Jim Crow America.

RE: INDIANA JONES and you're actually fucking serious pre-release discussion - Andy Bain II - 04-05-2018

Surely the "female Indiana Jones" already exists and is Lara Croft.

I'm 75% of the way through the first "reboot" game and although she takes as much of a physical beating as Indy, she's now mowing people down waaay more effortlessly than Jones in his prime.

Aaanyway. Just let it die. I still haven't (and will never) see Crystal Skull so it remains a trilogy for me.

Although I probably would watch Indiana Jones and the Wicker Man TBH

RE: INDIANA JONES and you're actually fucking serious pre-release discussion - simbob - 04-06-2018

I always thought the genre switch Lucas wanted to do was a really cool idea, problem is they didn't do it. The original talk was all about doing what they originally did with old adventure movies for '50s (but I'm also guessing '60s) sci-fi. But instead they just took the Indiana Jones formula and replaced the religious thing with aliens, and replaced the Nazis with the USSR while also being too afraid to make them too evil. (Although funnily enough I imagine many of the same people that would have had a problem with evil Russians in 2008 won't have any problem with it today) They also didn't even take the right Indiana Jones formula for that, if you're just going to do a Indy movie and plug aliens in you steal the format of the second movie with its cult, you don't use the format of the first and third movies.

It'd be interesting to see them try at that sci-fi thing again if they actually went for it. Indy being dropped into some Lovecraftian Quatermas Thing from Another Planet type thing with some giant bugs or something could be interesting. And it's not like you couldn't have Indy doing some kind of archaeology thing to ease the audience into the new direct. Ain't like stuff like She, Mountains of Madness, and Face in the Abyss don't have good ins for a archaeologists character.

If this movie does happen and they do just go back to normal Indy movies I'd hope they do something as huge as Tintin set piece wise, only practically.

Has anyone realized Spielberg says "change the name from Jones to Joan."

The last name. The surname. The last fucking name.

So I'm guessing Kathleen Kennedy's big idea to reboot Indiana Jones is gender swap? Well, it worked great for Ghostbusters.

This seems to be Kennedy's big move.

He surely meant the name thing as a pure joke. He's asked this question without warning, tries to navigate it on the fly, and buttons it up with a joke to move onto the next topic.
