ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - shaunh - 07-11-2018

Neill Blomkamp Directing ‘RoboCop Returns’ for MGM; Sequel to the Original Film!

The article notes the original writers (Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner are producing/executive producing) and Tim Miller (who's wrapping up the new Terminator) is rewriting their years' old script. No mention of Peter Weller.

Is undermining previous iterations going to be Blomkamp's schtick? Because he's already tried it once via Alien.

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - bartleby_scriven - 07-11-2018

Sure, why not? It's built in to the DNA of the story that technological advancements threaten to overwhelm Murphy's humanity. So here have him be an obsolete model trying to keep up with progress without losing his soul.

You know, like the original RoboCop 2 already did.

Bring back Weller.

Also Blomkamp keeps making promises he can't keep and fanboys keep falling for it, don't they?

Yeah. I'm cool with this. In another alternate universe, Chappy is regarded as a fun cult-classic.

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - Codename - 07-11-2018

Tbh, the Aliens sequel was literally just a couple of pieces of concept art he did that got some online traction before Ridley Scott decided to swing his dick around. This sounds much more legit with an actual chance of happening.

And yeah, I'm all for it. Blomkamp's a great choice to make it. And Robocop Returns is an awesome title.

But yes. Bring back Weller.

It is in THIS universe. By meeeeeee.

As underwhelmed as I've been with everything since District 9 (though I did have a brief try-to-defend-Elysium phase), I think Blomkamp is a great fit for Robocop (much better fit for this property than Aliens, really) and his web series stuff recently shows he has plenty of creative gas in the tank. I am just hoping the execution (particularly in the story and editing departments) is at a much higher level than it's been in his past couple movies.

Chappie was such a goddamn mess.

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - ska oreo - 07-11-2018

well, I'll always have Robocop2k14.

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - Mangy - 07-11-2018

Robocop is one of my all-time favorites. Chappie is an all-time disaster.

The big question: How will Blomkamp persuade them to set the story in South Africa?

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - shaunh - 07-11-2018

"DETROIT HAS BEEN RELOCATED TO SOUTH AFRICA..."

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - fuzzy dunlop - 07-11-2018

I like this. The first 15 minutes or so of CHAPPIE hinted that Blomkamp might actually have some cool ROBOCOP-inspired ideas; the movie quickly decides to jettison those interesting nuggets for something much dumber, but I still think he's a good fit for this. And say what you want about the guy, his aesthetic is pretty singular, his movies always look great, and he knows how to dial up the grisly violence.

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - serpico jones - 07-11-2018

Blomkamp had a hard time with Chappie because those nut jobs from Die Antwoord were trying to take over the set.

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - Alt-molt - 07-11-2018

So they're going to ignore ROBOCOP 2? Like none of it ever happened? Sorry, some memories will stay with me forever...

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - fuzzy dunlop - 07-11-2018

Blomkamp had a hard time with CHAPPIE because it might actually have been one of the worst ideas ever put to paper in the history of cinema.

It is for this reason I love it.

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - Mangy - 07-11-2018

So... Sharlto Copley will be Bob Morton, yes?

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - bartleby_scriven - 07-11-2018

I actually am really into this. RoboCop is a strange franchise (three movies, a remake, a live-action show, two cartoons, a made-for-TV mini-series and now this) that keeps persisting even though it never really catches on. But the potential is there to make some smart commentary on the Digital Age, the way the original did on '80s Me Culture, cable TV and big corporations.

Do more than just lip service about drones like the 2014 movie. Lean hard into Detroit as an apocalyptic wasteland.

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - serpico jones - 07-11-2018

I’ve never seen Chappie but I’ve read enough of the behind the scenes to know that it was a complete nightmare to make.

I mean, he should've known better...

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - Alt-molt - 07-11-2018

Good Lord, I can only imagine the state of Detroit's police department under Commissioner Cecil.

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - Codename - 07-11-2018

If you haven't seen the Oats Studios shorts he's done they're fucking great.

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - Judas Booth - 07-11-2018

Fuck this. They already poisoned the well with that remake a few years ago. Just let it go.

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - turingmachine75 - 07-11-2018

Weller retired from acting, didn't he?

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - commodorejohn - 07-11-2018

I mean, if you're looking to go full Verhoeven without actually having Verhoeven, Blomkamp is probably the closest modern equivalent.

And anything that involves casting the 2014 film into the outer darkness gets my seal of approval.

But yeah: Peter Weller or no deal.

This is where I am. It's the Verhoeven touch that makes RoboCop the classic it is (although the script is also great). Just mining the same-- pretty rudimentary-- sci-fi idea isn't going to give you anything close.

That said, I also don't think RoboCop 2 deserves to be ignored or done way with. It's okay.

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - bendrix - 07-11-2018

I don't know, man. Weller's 71 years old. I wouldn't want to don the Robocop suit for a movie shoot, and I'm 42.

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - Judas Booth - 07-11-2018

I also don't dig ignoring the flawed ROBOCOP 2. For all of my many issues with the film, it still has value and merit and should not be disposed of when considering continuity.

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - ryoken - 07-11-2018

Nope. Nope. NopeNopeNope.
Blokamp has made enough mistakes with Elysium and Chappie to nearly spend all goodwill from District 9.
And doing a sequel to fucking Robocop? In this day and age? Without Verhoeven's genius?
That Total Recall remake was proof enough this is a mistake, deliciously evil Kate Beckinsale be damned.
Not even the writers of the original being involved makes me confident in this.
This needs a Black Mirror level of talent and "Fuck you and enjoy the nightmares, audience" attitude to work, and Blokamp doesnt have it.
Hell, even a gonzo adaptation of Frank Miller's comics would be more interesting

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - fuzzy dunlop - 07-11-2018

ROBOCOP 2 is no ALIEN 3!

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - Alt-molt - 07-11-2018

There is a wealth of material introduced in ROBOCOP 2 that you could expand upon in a new film. I for one would love to know how society has benefitted from medicinal Nuke.

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - bradito - 07-11-2018

I'll probably see this.

Agreed 100%. Just look at the disaster of the recent remake for proof that no one will replicate the original.

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - bradito - 07-11-2018

I'm only a fan of sequels if they meet the following criteria:

A) They come out waaay after the franchise's expiration date.
B) They require you to ignore one or more existing sequels, prequels or remakes.
C) They have RoboCop in them.

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - MichaelM - 07-11-2018

I'm with JB and Co. on this. The first remains an accessible, relevant classic.

There is zero need or momentum for another RoboCop sequel/reboot.

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - bradito - 07-11-2018

Michael is no fun!

RE: ROBOCOP RETURNS - Pre-Release Thread - MichaelM - 07-11-2018

It's true. I am entirely funless.
