That's gonna be a big part of it, for sure. But meanwhile...

Jan 4: Welcome To Marwen. Well, at least it isn't a big-budget FX-heavy Henry Darger biopic.

Jan 6: The Adventures of Mark Twain (35mm, 1985). I love the "Mysterious Stranger" sequence for its darkness and weirdness.

Jan 6: Festival of Claymation (35mm, 1987). "The Creation" is the big winner here, with a huge assist from James Earl Jones' reading of the text.

Jan 12: I Wanna Hold Your Hand (1978). Dropped this on a couple of friends who are old enough to have actually seen the Beatles play. Big hit.

Jan 20: Gog (3D, 1954). On one hand, this might be the very first cyber-terrorism movie. On the other, it's unbearably talky and tedious.

Jan 20: Local Hero (35mm, 1983). Just a perfect gem of a film. The live Q&A with Peter Riegert after was pretty great too.

Jan 21: They Shall Not Grow Old (3D). Cheers for extra screenings added. But why not a proper release already?

Jan 22: Captain America: The First Avenger (3D, 2011). I'd forgotten how purely entertaining this movie is.

Jan 22: ffolkes (1980). Oddball thriller stands out for Moore's eccentric title character and some nifty miniature effects.

Jan 23: Roma. Yup, Best Actress right there.

Feb 8: Free Solo. It's the onscreen perspective of the director and crew that really brings home the impact of what their friend is doing.

Feb 12: Conquest of Space (1955). Early "hard sci-fi" spends a surprising amount of time on issues of low morale, bad communication, and awful comic relief.

Feb 16: The Young and Prodigious T. S. Spivet (3D, 2013). Gorgeous and inventive, and not a little touching. Too bad it didn't get a proper stateside release.

Feb 19: The Shining (1980). Nicholson's facial expressions really are the main event. Little too much tongue-waggling though.

Feb 20: Alita: Battle Angel (3D). A total blast. Also features the best PG-13 f-bomb in years.

Feb 23: Solo (3D, 2018). I totally forgot there's a full half-hour of movie left to go after the big action climax.

Feb 24: Gravity (2013). Still can't tell if Stone accidentally starts the fire on the ISS.

Mar 1: Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977, Director's Cut). Live concert presentation with the San Francisco Symphony. I forgot what a big role the chorus plays.

Mar 2: 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957). Harryhausen's last black-and-white production sports some unusually innovative FX.

Mar 2: Earth Vs. the Flying Saucers (1956). Is it weird that this film paints the near-total destruction of Washington DC as an unambiguous victory?

Mar 2: The Valley of Gwangi (1969). Sneakily sophisticated script for a Harryhausen flick, with nearly every character tempted to sell out at some point.

Mar 3: Son of Fury (1941). Underrated Tyrone Power vehicle boasts a tremendously satisfying revenge storyline, plus a cast loaded with scene-stealers.

Mar 4: Space Truckers (1996). The Good Sport Award goes to Charles Dance, and he's also the recipient of an all-time great Dennis Hopper line reading.

Mar 5: The Door (Die Tür, 2009). Domestic thriller takes a neat spin into Twilight Zone territory, but then gets distracted by the implications of its own premise.

Mar 6: Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (2016). The perfect thing for a stuck-home-with-a-migraine type evening.

Mar 14: Captain Marvel (3D). Lots of fun, and Larson's chemistry with Jackson is a big part of that.

Mar 16: Avengers: Age of Ultron (3D, 2015). All superhero movies compress the narrative of their villains, but this really feels more like the Afternoon of Ultron.

Mar 17: Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988). Still a technical marvel, and a tour de force for Bob Hoskins.

Mar 17: Skyscraper (3D, 2018). I really like that the heroes' marriage is solid from the ground up and the film avoids the usual "choose work or family" tropes.

Mar 26: The Long Good Friday (1979). Hoskins is just unbelievably good in this. That final shot.

Mar 29: They Shall Not Grow Old (2018). I'm glad to see that the expanded release still includes the short making-of segment at the end.

Apr 2: Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009). Divide that by nine, please.

Apr 2: Dave (1993). Because a friend couldn't remember which movie "we're walking, we're walking..." was from. Happy to oblige.

Apr 9: Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979, Director's Edition). It's really just that first act that gets things off on the wrong foot. Once we hit the cloud it's fine.

Apr 11: Missing Link. Much lighter in tone than Studio Laika's usual offerings, but the villains don't get off easy. Design and animation are gorgeous.

Apr 14: 18 to Party. Unreleased. Watch this space.

Apr 14: Jivaro! (3D, 1954) Exciting and unpredictable pulp adventure with grisly action and glorious Rhonda Fleming.

Apr 15: The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet (3D, 2013). Too bad this didn't get a wide US release, but I don't know how I would have promoted it.

Apr 19: After the Fox (1966). Sellers' "American tourist" disguise is the best.

Apr 20: My Favorite Brunette (1947). Probably the ideal Bob Hope 'heroic coward' movie.

RE: Your Year of Living OCD: 2019 Edition - hammerhead - 04-11-2019

Oh wow, Vibes.

RE: Your Year of Living OCD: 2019 Edition - huntertarantino - 04-11-2019

Not a bad movie, honestly. Cyndi Lauper has presence and it’s peak Jeff Goldblum from the get-go.

With a better director, I think it’d at least have cult status.

RE: Your Year of Living OCD: 2019 Edition - hammerhead - 04-12-2019

Yeah, the cast is solid all around. Peter Falk doing his In-Laws thing, Elizabeth Peña doing the tango. How'd you see it?

RE: Your Year of Living OCD: 2019 Edition - huntertarantino - 04-12-2019

Video store in town. Also how I watched the dreadful 1987 Man on Fire among many others.

The cast makes the movie. The shocker for me was young Steve Buscemi as a jackass who hits on Cyndi Lauper at the race track.

Apr 21: The Sea Wolf (1941). Man, E.G. Robinson was an unlikely movie star. But you can't take your eyes off him.

Apr 21: Hangover Square (1945). Dig those super smooth crane/dolly camera moves in the concert sequence.

Apr 24: The Princess Bride (1987). Watching this with someone who keeps asking questions about the characters adds another level to it.

Apr 24: Apollo 11. Wish I'd caught this in IMAX. That Saturn V liftoff.

Apr 24: The Man Who Would Be King (1975). God I love those Whitlock matte shots.

Apr 27: Avengers: Endgame (3D). Oops, looks like they didn't have time to 3D-convert that one big group shot.

Apr 30: Come As You Are. Currently making festival rounds, this is a charming and raunchy road movie about three disabled men looking to lose their virginity.

May 1: Repo Man (1984). Appreciated Robby Müller's use of color this time around.

May 1: Spider-Man: Homecoming (3D, 2017). That twist is so beautifully, organically laid in.

May 4: Avengers: Endgame. Karen Gillan does an amazing job keeping the various iterations of her character distinct.

May 5: Missing Link (3D). It's cool that Laika doesn't overdo it with 3D compositions, but they could go for a little more separation.

May 5: Long Day's Journey Into Night (3D, 2018). Imagine if Wong Kar-Wai and Andrei Tarkovsky had a baby.

May 8: Long Day's Journey Into Night (3D). I'm fascinated by this film even though I keep dozing off during it.

May 12: An Accidental Zombie (Named Ted). This has been floating around for a while  but doesn't seem to have gotten a full release. It's silly and cute.

May 13: My Favorite Brunette (1947). Appreciated Dorothy Lamour's performance this time around. She gets in a lot of subtle reactions.

May 13: Pitch Perfect 2 (2015). Great fun, with little satirical smartbombs planted everywhere.

May 16: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982, Director's Edition). This time I noticed: Only two working phaser props. One blinks and one doesn't.

May 22: Asbury Park: Riot, Revolution, Rock 'N Roll. Strong subject matter, so-so execution. The narration really grates.

May 24: The Chaperone. A little stilted to start, but relaxes in concert with McGovern's lovely performance. Richardson's haircut isn't quite right.

May 24: Never Look Away (2018). Three hours plus and I was riveted, even on four hours' sleep.

May 25: Sherman's March (1986). If you know Ross McElwee's documentaries, you know the best part is always when Charleen shows up.

May 28: The Warriors (1979). Today I learned that the character of Fox gets run over by a train because the actor got fired.

June 1: Headhunters (Hodejegerne, 2011) This screenplay is so solid it should be taught in schools.

June 1: I Was An Adventuress (1940). This is my secret weapon recommendation for anyone who's run out of classic romantic comedies to watch.

June 8: Teenagers From Outer Space (1959). Live Cinema Insomnia show with Mr. Lobo!

June 8: Bride of the Monster (1955). In Angorarama!

June 11: Always Be My Maybe. Yes, the Keanu cameo really is that funny.

June 11: Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese. Take the interviews with a grain of salt. The performances are outstanding.

June 12: Shadow (Ying). You want divided loyalties? Come get 'em fractured, splintered, braided, shredded. Love the razorblade umbrellas too.

June 16: The Legend of Tarzan (3D, 2016). I'm not sure that historical contextualization was the way to go here.

June 18: The Flame of New Orleans (1941). Minor Dietrich, but worth it for the way she plays with her persona.

June 20: Booksmart. Tremendously confident, funny, and moving. The scene in the pizza car? Some of the best laughs I've had in a very long time.

June 21: Like, Reply, Share. As yet unreleased. Watch this space.

June 21: Being Frank. Film is set in 1992 for the sole (unspoken) reason that cell phones and the internet would unravel the plot in milliseconds.

June 23: Laputa: Castle In the Sky (1986). What about the little birds? Will they be okay in high orbit?

June 24: Spectre (2015). What's the point of making Blofeld the "architect of all (Bond's) pain" in a continuity that doesn't include Tracy?

June 26: Do the Right Thing (1989). Still visually stunning, still excruciatingly topical.

Jun 29: Porco Rosso (1992). Speaking of topical, I forgot about the "rising tide of fascism" subplot.

Jun 30: Yesterday. The hero's reluctance to lock it down with Lily James broke my suspension of disbelief before the what-if scenario even began.

Jul 1: Piranha 3DD (3D, 2011). You never know when you'll discover some unheralded schlock masterpiece but this is just crass garbage.

Jul 3: Stand-In (1937). Hey, Yesterday, here's how you show the guy not getting that the girl's in love with him. Our hero is practically on the spectrum.

Jul 4: Spider-Man: Far From Home (3D). C'mon people, at least shoot Zendaya's hair in native 3D and save yourselves some work on the conversion.

Jul 6: War and Peace (Vojna i mir, 1967, parts 1 and 2). Spectacular restoration, even though the 70mm source appears completely lost.

Jul 7: War and Peace (Vojna i mir, 1967, parts 3 and 4). The finale is patchier than I'd remembered. They probably wanted to just get it done.

Jul 10: Paris Is Burning (1990). Probably impossible to measure this film's influence on present-day pop culture.

Jul 11: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017, 3D). Impulse rewatch due to a Mantis meme that's been going around. Love Mantis.

Jul 23: Vanishing Point (European version, 1971). Definitely works better with Charlotte Rampling. Like most things.

Jul 26: Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood (35mm). Possibly the first Tarantino film I've ever genuinely enjoyed from beginning to end.

Aug 5: Toy Story 4. Low on jokes, heavy on pathos. That said, I was most concerned about whether the Combat Carl gag was going to pay off.

Aug 5: The Bubble (3D, 1966). Dull and drawn-out, despite continuity jumps that suggest it originally ran even longer. Good 3D though.

Aug 11: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).  HEY.

Aug 11: The Driver (1978). Good action, but no sympathetic characters.

Aug 11: The Tall Blond Man With One Black Shoe (1972). That damn Zamfir theme will be stuck in my head for the rest of the week.

Aug 20: The Big Lebowski (1998). The folks had just learned about it and were curious. Not really Mom's cup of tea, but she loved Bridges.

Aug 25: A Hard Day's Night (1964). Chose this for my birthday party, and it turned out most of the group had never seen it. Achievement unlocked!

Aug 31: 47 Ronin (3D, 2013). Loaded with opulent, possibly excessive detail, but the best special effect is Rinko Kikuchi's wicked smile.

Sep 5: Dangerous Crossing (1953). Economical nobody-believes-me thriller lacks the wit of Hitchcock but gets by on production value and actor appeal.

Sep 5: Tension (1949). Nifty little wrong-man noir with a kickass femme fatale turn from Audrey Totter.

Sep 8: To Catch a Thief (1954). So easy to overlook the plot with this one. Why ARE Robie's old war buddies out to get him?

Sep 17: The Manchurian Candidate (1962). Nothing's changed.

Sep 21: Maiden. Stunning and inspiring. Also, so much beer!

Sep 27: Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles. Loving if somewhat unfocused documentary showcases a wide variety of performances. I wanted more of the Brooklyn schoolkids.

Sep 29: Persistence of Vision (2014). The ultimate fate of Richard Williams' passion project would feel more heartbreaking if it didn't also feel inevitable.

Sep 30: Bedazzled (1967). "Licensed To Buy And Sell Spirits." Heh.

Oct 3: Let the Right One In (2008). I didn't mind the cats nearly as much this time around.

Oct 5: Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound. Satisfying documentary about a side of filmmaking that often gets overlooked.

Oct 5: 39 1/2. Slight but sweet zero-budget comedy with an appealing lead performance from Beth Lisick.

Oct 12: G. I. Joe: Retaliation (3D, 2013). Between the divided-loyalty twists and the massive body count it's really hard telling the good guys from the bad guys.

Oct 13: How to Train Your Dragon 2 (3D, 2014). Feels like two stories mashed together, which might well be the case. Doesn't reach the emotional impact of the first.

Oct 17: Gemini Man (2K 3D 60fps). Starts slow, but Mary Elizabeth Winstead with a machine gun is worth waiting for.

Oct 19: Gemini Man (2K 3D 60fps). If you have the choice, definitely pick polarized 3D over Dolby Vision.

Oct 22: Miller's Crossing (1990). Hadn't seen this since it came out. Mary Kay Place is a revelation.

Oct 23: Night of the Demon (1957). That look on Niall McGinnis' face.

Oct 23: The Mad Magician (3D, 1954). One of the rare Vincent Price films to make threatening use of his physical size.

Oct 30: Get Out (2017, San Francisco Symphony live). I thought I'd missed my chance to see this with a big crowd. Well worth it.

Nov 6: Earth Vs. the Spider (1958). Tedious and inconsistent, but props to Bert I. Gordon for using a theatre location to plug his other movies.

Nov 6: The Giant Gila Monster (1959). Actually works pretty well, thanks to some sympathetic characters and a decent grounding in the hot-rod world.

Nov 9: Kong: Skull Island (3D, 2017). Still the modern monster movie to beat, in my estimation.

Nov 9: Juggernaut (1974). Everything and everyone in this film is ragged and uncomfortable even before the bomb scare starts. I was properly hooked.

Nov 12: San Andreas (3D, 2015). Needs more of Alexandra Daddario running.

Nov 12: Freebie and the Bean (1974). I don't know how this wild mess of a movie could have happened but I'm glad it did. Caan and Arkin's dynamic is amazing.

Nov 14: Ford v Ferrari. More like Ford vs Shelby & Miles-- the Ferrari team gets very little screen time. Bale's most purely entertaining performance in years.

Nov 15: Parasite (3D, 1982). Film's barely-there post-apocalyptic scenario is actually more plausible than many better-made, higher-budgeted films.

Nov 24: Spy (2015, unrated version). I was much more aware of how aggressively editing was used to re-shape scenes and performances this time around.

Dec 2: The Baker's Wife (La femme du boulanger, 1938). One of those titles I've been meaning to see for years, and it does not disappoint.

Dec 10: Dressed to Kill (1980). Hard to believe this was a mainstream hit-- it's remarkably rude and sleazy. Winning turn from Nancy Allen.

Dec 11: Headline Shooter (1933). One of my favorite Pre-Code yarns, with tons of disaster footage and snappy dialogue packed into its 61 minutes.

Dec 13: Up (3D, 2009). Every damn time Carl crosses his heart.

Dec 14: Bad Santa (2003). I totally forgot about the bit with the jumper cables.

Dec 14: Love, Actually (2003). Not sure if I spent more time trying to identify the supporting actors or trying to figure out the characters' connections.

Dec 15: The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939). Not a whole lot of Holmes here, but production design is top-notch.

Dec 16: The Irishman (or is the title actually I Heard You Paint Houses?). Didn't feel like 3.5 hours; didn't feel short either. Romano steals it.

Dec 22: Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (3D). I counted no fewer than three Bad Robot veterans. Apparently I had nothing better to do.

133 viewings, including rewatches but not including TV series, which definitely to a bite out of my time this year.
