Amazon's CARNIVAL ROW - MichaelM - 06-04-2019

Official synopsis:

Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne star in Carnival Row, a Victorian fantasy world filled with mythological immigrant creatures. Feared by humans, they are forbidden to live, love, or fly with freedom. But even in darkness, hope lives, as a human detective and a faerie rekindle a dangerous affair. The city’s uneasy peace collapses when a string of murders reveals a monster no one could imagine.

Trailer:

I'm not really a fan of either of the leads. Bloom was fine in the LOTR films, and the first couple of POTC flicks, but he seemed too slight to carry a film or show. And my exposure to Delevingne is pretty much just SUICIDE SQUAD and VALERIAN, neither of which did her any favors.

But...the premise is intriguing (for me). Love me some gothic, supernatural Victorian shit, and seems like they're throwing in some steampunk elements, too. And it's an original property: not an adaptation. Which, for me, is a bonus: more freedom to explore the story and world, and more surprises for the audience.

Script was really cool. Unfortunately in my head I cast more interesting leads...

Anything with Victorian aesthetics is a must watch for me.

I'll remain optimistic, for now, that this will be a Josh Hartnett in Penny Dreadful situation for Bloom: we'll be pleasantly surprised by his presence and acting in an ongoing series vs big screen blockbusters.

Delevigne, though....she just seems slight, in every way.

Orlando Bloom is a piece of balsa wood. The most boring pile of nothing this side of Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

RE: Amazon's CARNIVAL ROW - MichaelM - 06-07-2019

Pop quiz: rank in terms of balsa woodeness: AT-J, Bloom, and Sam Worthington.

GO!

RE: Amazon's CARNIVAL ROW - Evi - 06-07-2019

Wow, the premise sounds interesting but way to cast two of the slightest, least charismatic actors alive as the leads.

Also, from best to worst

1. Worthington (his roles in The Debt and Rogue put him leagues ahead of the others)
2. AT-J (not bad in Kickass or Nocturnal Animals)
3. Bloom

RE: Amazon's CARNIVAL ROW - MichaelM - 06-07-2019

Like I said: if Harnett could surprise us in PENNY DREADFUL, maybe there's something these two can do in this premise.

Maybe.

Blood has some fun chewing the scenery in Paul WS Anderson's Three Musketeers.

The script is genuinely great. But will it work as a series...? Depends, how many episodes is it? It works as a 120 page script, but as a season of television?

RE: Amazon's CARNIVAL ROW - Neil Spurn - 06-07-2019

Wait, when was this a feature length script? I know nothing about this property.

RE: Amazon's CARNIVAL ROW - freeman - 06-07-2019

It was a popular spec I think from the early blacklist from the Pacific Rim guy.

It's just a noir murder mystery story with fantasy elements. Instead of hounds the police use werewolves to flush out foes etc. It read a lot like Minority Report with fantasy to me.

RE: Amazon's CARNIVAL ROW - Fafhrd - 09-02-2019

This has obviously and deservedly been overshadowed by Dark Crystal this weekend, but I thought it was pretty alright.

It's definitely the best Cara Delevingne has been in anything I've seen her in (which isn't much). Bloom does pretty okay, but it's not the 'Josh Hartnett in Penny Dreadful' level surprise that I was hoping for.

The political intrigue stuff is the most interesting plot in this season and seems like it's going to be the backbone of Season 2. It owes a lot to Game of Thrones, though. There's one character who almost verbatim quotes 'Chaos is a ladder.'

RE: Amazon's CARNIVAL ROW - Richard Dickson - 09-02-2019

I've watched the first three episodes, and I kinda wish the series was set during the war rather than in the aftermath.

RE: Amazon's CARNIVAL ROW - MichaelM - 09-02-2019

I've only seen one episode. Agreed that Bloom is better than expected but not great.

Which is kind of my reaction - good enough to keep me watching (or at least the next episode), but I'm not raving about it.

I found the worldbuilding REALLY clunky in that first episode. I feel like there are many other, more effective ways the show could've given us the information.

RE: Amazon's CARNIVAL ROW - waaaaaaaalt - 09-02-2019

Watched the first ep. Are he magical folk are supposed to represent the oppressed? Im not certain. Maybe another scene of a man yelling about it will make it sink in.

Anyway it's fine so far I guess. Like it looks expensive and it looks to have promise but it just hasn't gotten me yet.

RE: Amazon's CARNIVAL ROW - slim - 09-02-2019

That parliament-whatever scene was only missing some guy yelling out "THEY TOOK ER JERBS!"

On episode 2 now. It's all right so far. I'll stick with it.

RE: Amazon's CARNIVAL ROW - huntertarantino - 09-02-2019

I saw Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne were in a high-concept fantasy show.

One-hit kill to my interest.

RE: Amazon's CARNIVAL ROW - deanburger - 09-10-2019

I was pleasantly surprised by how violent this was. The third episode flashes back to the war and made me wish I was watching that show instead. Nothing in the main story matches that scale and intrigue.

RE: Amazon's CARNIVAL ROW - atomtastic - 09-10-2019

This shit is so dorky. You kinda have to admire how uncool it is.

RE: Amazon's CARNIVAL ROW - Neil Spurn - 09-10-2019

This wasn't bad.
