MIB International Pre-Release Thread
And The Addams Family films have a level of manic energy and humor that Burton could never capture.

The closest is Pee Wee's Big Adventure, but that's all Paul Reubens.

And MIB's not *really* like Ghostbusters. Consider:

- MIB is a top-secret, government-funded organization; the Ghostbusters are entrepreneurs who advertise on TV and are about to go belly-up shortly after launching.

- MIB is basically a mentor/student buddy movie with an audience surrogate as the protagonist who brings us into the story; the Ghostbusters see a ghost within the film's first few minutes, build their own gear to capture and contain them and have to fight for credibility throughout the film.

- MIB doesn't have a romantic subplot; Ghostbusters does.

I notice that comparisons to Ghostbusters is also brought up often in praise of GALAXY QUEST

I get what type of sci-fi/fantasy comedy sensibility that the comparisons are trying to go for, but yeah... the three movies in question are really nothing alike beyond all having fun hooks

It's close enough. In that it's a group of people whose day to day, 9 to 5, is taking care of unusual paranormal (does that word apply or is that strictly meant to describe ghosts and such?) or strange things that the everyday person would find utterly bizarre. They're not exactly the same but it's the thing I always think of first if I had to compare it to something. What would be closer? Hellboy? Maybe?

Why is this thread suddenly making me want to revisit Evolution.

Second MIB has more of an actual romantic subplot. I realize that's splitting hairs but...it IS there.

Comparing it to Ghostbusters is a VERY broad description. Like saying RoboCop is like The Terminator if the Terminator were a good guy. Or, Bad Boys is like Lethal Weapon. I think it works more in a "they should appeal to the same audience" kinda way. If you like Ghostbusters...here's a movie where guys bust aliens..
