The B Action Movie Thread
For the most part it looked practical. There are definitely shots with digital blood on display but by in large they went old-fashioned. There isn't the nuance in THE MERECENARY that Johnson displayed in ACCIDENT MAN or THE DEBT COLLECTOR, this one is strictly by-the-book "One man army" stuff and on that level it takes care of business.

Just learned that HIGHLANDER THE SERIES's Stan Kirsch has passed away at 51 due to suicide.

What a shock. I grew up watching that show. Some great sword fights and story lines. It's helped that Adrian Paul is a natural martial artist and swordsman.

Decent action, but nothing you haven't seen before.  Sorry, I forgot about the film (and my post) a mere two hours after having watched it.  Sober!

Trailer for new action sensation Daniel Radcliff in GUNS AKIMBO:

Has a CRANK meets SHOOT 'EM UP vibe to it. These overly-zany action flicks are hard to pull off but maybe this one is up to the task.

For anyone interested, William Kaufman's latest, The Brave, just showed up on Netflix Instant.

Louis Mandylor and Armand Assante are in it.

Cool. I liked that one. Good shot to see Mandylor front and center as a lead.

Hope Kaufman gets something else cooking here in the near future.

This makes it sound a lot more interesting than I expected:

This is because directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are extremely competent action stylists, trading in Michael Bay’s sun-soaked pastiche for the neon hues of Miami nightlife. They expertly stage hand-to-hand combat, gunfights, car chases, and yes, explosions with an enticing grasp on momentum, geography, and comedic timing. It feels more inspired by Asian action cinema than Bay’s oeuvre, but the stylistic shift is subtle enough that it’s in keeping with the old while still kicking ass like something new.

Fat Donnie Yen to the rescue.

Tough to gauge the reviews for this movie because a lot of them come with an attitude of "It's been 17 years since the awful BAD BOYS 2..." and at that point I tune out whatever else they have to say.

Looking forward to seeing BBFL though, even if it's not as insane as part 2 a solid throwback buddy cop flick would be just fine by me.

Yeah, there's a real appeal to me for an old school big budget action flick that's not a superhero film. We don't get that many of them any more.

Just tell Bruce they've got a great lunch cart.

Quote:“Moonfall” centers on a mysterious force knocking the moon from its orbit around Earth, which sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. In response, a ragtag team launches an impossible last-ditch mission into space to land on the lunar surface and save Earth from annihilation.

Watched IP MAN 4. Enjoyed it. Yen has the character down and still knows his way around a fight scene.

I was curious to see if Adkins could outdo his villain turn in WOLF WARRIOR. He sure did! If you ever wondered how A FEW GOOD MEN would have been different if Col. Jessup was a karate expert then Adkins answers that question here.

Donnie Yen beating up Chris Collins just made me cheer.

Nice Bruce Lee Alley fight as well.

Watching Ip Man 4 with Scott Adkins and Mark Strange (Bouncer in Avengement, who fought Bruce Lee in the alley) was a great time.

He occasionally threw out an extra line and when the audience was muted in their response to Geddes' villainy, he said 'It's OK, you are supposed to hate me'.

Aside from Adkins, the other unreal character in that movie is the evil cheerleader.

"Bitch!"

Yen having that battle of the spinning table with the head of the CBA was also awesome.

I'll watch it, but it has that same generic vibe that most Netflix movies do.

Saw OUTRAGE CODA was on Prime so I gave that a watch. These OUTRAGE films are all like 85% old men yelling at each other but for some reason I find them oddly compelling. This third entry was about the same. Guess I can stand all the yapping because I know eventually Kitano will cause all kinds of carnage and that was certainly the case with this one.

Also saw RUNNING WITH THE DEVIL with Nic Cage and Laurence Fishburne. Yikes. What a nothing of a movie. Good cast. Barry Pepper, Cole Hauser and Clifton Collins Jr. all show up but there is zero energy to the proceedings. Drug smuggling has never looked so mundane.

Saw Bad Boys For Life and really enjoyed it.  For starters, the action is nowhere near as over the top as before, but there is plenty of it.  The film knows it sinks or swims on the chemistry of its leads and plays to that strength.  Much of it is exactly as it was in the previous films, so it has that Bad Boys feel, for sure.  Having many of the surviving cast return was great.  I refer specifically to Joey Pants.
As far as negatives go, I don't want to go into any spoilers but, considering Smith's Gemini Man was his previous film, some of the things that happen in this film.....
It will likely not be your favourite film in the series, but in comparison to things like Last Blood, I'm glad it exists and watched with a big smile on my face.

I liked Running With The Devil a bit more than you, Molt, but I accept that it took itself a bit too seriously.  It needed to be a lot more violent and pacy to justify everything else.  Sicario had the shocks that Devil needed.
Do you think the film would have worked better if Cage and Fishburne swapped roles?
Reply
That might have helped. There’s just nothing to Cage’s character at all. Fishburne at least gets to go a little over the top but not enough to get much of a jolt out of me. I knew I was in trouble when the film flashed nicknames for the characters on the screen. Usually a bad omen.

I’m with you on BBFL. Good solid fun. Has plenty of comedy but is able to get convincingly dramatic when it needs to be.

With THE BOUNCER it was just a case of one dour movies too many for Van Damme. Been seeing him play that note so much over the last 15 years that it was hard to be impressed with him doing it again, even though it was a competently made picture.
