Conan on TBS
The Tina Fey one is good as well.  I like how they commemorate the releases of some of the podcast episodes by putting old interviews with the guest from the LATE NIGHT days on Youtube.  I have only seen Letterman's first appearance on Conan in short clips before this.

In a podcast about a year ago, I think, Conan singled out director Abe Ferrera as the worst interviewee in his twenty-five year career as a host, citing the fact that he showed up wasted and at one point bolted 30 Rock, forcing the segment producer to chase him down and somehow corral him back in time to shoot his appearance.  The interview came up again when Willem Dafoe brought it up last night.  It has now appeared on Conan's official Youtube channel so that future generations can enjoy it in reference quality:

The Ghana special was really good. The movie poster stuff was a bit wonky though.

The trailer kind of distracted from the rest of the special, but it was cool to see the guy responsible for some of those posters. I might want to check out WAR BUS now. I also really enjoyed the visit with the coffin maker, and pretty much everything with Sam Richardson. He and Conan make a good team, and Richardson sharing his thoughts on the Year of Return was pretty powerful.

The scene with the kids from Chicago was good too.

Finished the podcast with Neil Young today. That was good too. More and more I am liking the podcast better than the TV show.

The team is getting better at making these travel shows.  I believe Ghana makes thirteen - a whole season's worth of Conan Without Borders, produced simultaneously with the commitments of a nightly show over a five year period.  Whenever the plug is finally pulled on the talk show, Conan has laid a strong foundation for the next career phase.

I'm gonna take a wild guess that Brian Stack was the Late Show writer who came up with this.

TBS re-aired the Italy special last night. It’s easily my favorite. Conan and Jordan are so good.

I hate that it's been three years since Norm's last appearance on the show.  Meanwhile's he already got his second spot on Davd Spade's show lined up.  Norm needs to be back on Conan's couch, a guest on his podcast, and his traveling companion on CONAN WITHOUT BORDERS: QUEBEC.

On a weekly basis.

Was really expecting the Nikki Glazer podcast to be a lot more blue than it ended up being. I mean, it had its moments but not what I was expecting. I still liked it a lot though.

The Barkley podcast was fantastic. The stuff with Conan’s small fingers killed me.

Wednesday will mark the tenth anniversary of Conan's final NBC show. Crazy.

It seems to have flown under the radar, but there is a Triumph podcast now.  It is a live quiz show, sort of like a particularly vulgar answer to NPR's "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me."  The premiere episode:

I can't imagine they'll be making these too frequently considering all the material Smigel and company must have to prepare for this.  Still, any Triumph content is welcome.

Thanks for the heads up. It looks like this was produced under the banner of Starburns Audio...is that owned by Dino Stamatopoulos?

The latest Conan pod is Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara...not as good as some of the other shows, although it was fascinating to learn that Levy was shooting a softcore porn movie the night of the moon landing.

Amazingly, that Dropbox link of Conan's final TONIGHT SHOW that somebody put on the internet still works for me, five years later.

That’s disappointing to hear. The quality of the podcast that is...

Conan interviews Keegan-Michael Key on the newest episode of his podcast.

There's some damn funny parts...
I used to be with "it", but then they changed what "it" was. Now, what I'm with isn't "it", and what's "it" seems weird and scary to me.   -Grandpa Simpson

Yeah, the Billy Dee Williams stuff was fantastic.

Conan is in London, so it looks like we know where the next “Without Borders” is going to be.

Hmm, but wouldn't this be the first time he does so without announcing the trip ahead of time?  I notice that all the talk shows are off this week.  Conan could be taping a "regular" remote (the Tom Cruise car one, for example, was shot in London), be accommodating a UK-based podcast guest, or actually be on vacation.

I've been waiting to see this again for a while:

So it's come to light how Conan spent his week in the UK:

1) He recorded an episode of his podcast with Ricky Gervais.
2) He met up with British stand-up James Veitch.  I will speculate that this has something to do with the series of standup specials Conan is producing for HBO Max.  Veitch was announced as part of the lineup, so maybe they were taping his set and Conan was there to host or introduce it.
3) He accepted an invitation by The Oxford Union to do a Q&A:

Conan is about to go on a two-week hiatus.  I'll bet production of the next travel show was once penciled in for that, but you have to figure the pandemic has grounded CONAN WITHOUT BORDERS for a while.  I am not counting on Comic-Con, either.

Kevin Frank, the artist who was responsible for many of the commercial bumper graphics on all of Conan's talk shows, has uploaded massive galleries of his work:

Late Night with Conan O'Brien bumpers
The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien bumpers
Conan bumpers

The lineup for Conan's first week back amidst the pandemic, which will be shot from his home with an iPhone and with the celebrity interviews being conducted via Skype, has been released:

3/30 - Adam Sandler
3/31 - Sophie Turner
4/1 - Jesse Eisenberg
4/2 - Sean Hayes

Here's hoping these turn out to be the TBS show's equivalent of the writers strike episodes.

Spent this past week and today catching up on some of the podcasts I’ve missed or skipped over...

Sara Silverman - very disappointing
Jim Gaffigan - surprisingly awesome (not a fan of his)
Ali Wong - don’t know much about her but it was good
Paul Reubans - not good
Andy Daly - meh
Will Arnett - same as Gaffigan
Whitney Cummings - very funny

The Daly one kinda ran out of steam, but I thought it was pretty fun for a while. The Arnett/Gaffigan ones are great. Haven't heard the Silverman/Reubens ones yet, what was so bad about them? Just not funny?
Reply
Yeah, the Daly one just kinda went off the rails when he started doing characters.

The Silverman/Reubens episodes had funny parts (Silverman has a great story about trying to hookup with Conan back in the day) but overall I just didn’t find them all that funny. Reubens was just so low key.

I mean, the Conan/Sona/Gourley stuff always kills. But the interviews on these two were just meh...in my opinion.

Yeah, the shows where the guests are more in tune to Conan's manic riffiness are the ones that work best.

Terrifying how young they both look in this.

I think the “work from home” was starting to have a negative effect on Conan. Both the show and the podcast were not nearly as good the longer the quarantine went.
