One can hope that that Godzilla disc is either based off of the 3D blu source or a new master entirely instead of using the insanely dark 2D blu's source.

What choo talkin bout Willis?

This makes me veddy happy. I might pull the trigger on one, both or neither....but it's cool that they are coming out at all. It all depends on how much of BvS is in the expanded ratio and whether I like the new Justice League or not. Of the two...Justice League is far and away the most likely one I'll pick up. Thank you for posting this..

The thing I read didn't specify which one it would be struck from but made a point of saying that the new Godzilla disc will have "extremely dark black levels while improving on the obvious shortcomings of the blu ray.." That's hardly a review but...I hope that gives you a good feeling about it. It does me..

I saw the 4K of Hell or High Water for $10 in store at Walmart if anyone wants that. I was looking for Collaterall but they didn't have it.

I need to pick up Collateral.

Always been a big fan of that one..

I just don't see the point of collateral on 4K

Why deny yourself the highest fidelity smeary early 2000s digital video?

I'd like to see it on 4K and judge for myself. It's probably gloriously grainy.

If nothing else, the sound will be great. Collateral is an odd ',Taxicab confessions' digitally shot, weird movie. Some parts look kinda blurry.... some parts look ULTRA sharp. Usually the outdoor stuff has the documentary vibe and the indoor stuff looks more like a normal movie. The scene in the club with the Bourne Identity music for example, looks SUPER sharp. I didn't mind this filming style for Collateral or Miami Vice but...I think it was a mistake to make Public Enemies look that way. It ruined the period look of the film and was jarring and out of place ..though I still really like Public Enemies..

grain isn't the problem

I love grain

it's just because the camera used at the time maxed out at what was essentially blu-ray resolution (aside from a few shots done on film here and there). And digital noise isn't quite the same as film grain

so it's a situation similar to AOTC. there's only so much visual data to gain from the source

that's not to say there are benefits to a higher bit-rate and expanded color. but collateral isn't even particularly colorful

Ever see Inland Empire by David Lynch, Nooj? That's some hardcore digital video. It probably has permanently baked-in aliasing. It makes 28 Days Later look like Avatar.

Go back and read what I said lol...I wasn't dissing grain. Grain in movies should NEVER be scrubbed away. That's a bad thing.

SOME parts of Collateral are surprisingly colorful and the way LA is shot is like a character on its own.

I thought that AOTC was maxxed out picture-wise on blu ray as well. Especially after all the info Overlord posted about it but the AOTC 4K is something else. They did some true wizardry with that one and it looks AMAZING on UHD. As good as Revenge of the Sith or any of the Disney films. I didn't think it COULD ever look that organic and natural and beautiful. So....that makes me curious to see what might have been pulled off here..

I didn't mean to imply you were dissing it

I was just saying how grainy it looks isn't the problem. Because it's not 'grain' to begin with.

But if you think AOTC was improved on UHD, maybe the COLLATERAL 4K is for you.

I thought it was fascinating how soft and smudged it looked. It didn't compare to the other films at all.

Really? I thought it was just me and referred to Blu-ray.com to see what they said about the AOTC 4K and they gave it pretty much their highest marks and they're notoriously picky on this sort of thing.

I know that Collateral doesn't showcase TRUE film grain because it wasn't shot on film but...there is a significant amount of...let's say visual noise...that's inherently a part of the picture and it should stay that way and I'm fine with that. Plus, I'm fairly knowledgeable about this sort of thing...but I'm not terribly picky in the long run. Lol kinda like with films themselves. I know a botch job when I see one though...like that infamous Predator blu ray or Kino's White Zombie which is, sadly, unwatchable. Criterion should pick up White Zombie and do it right. That's literally the worst DNR I've ever seen. It looked like a Madame Tussaud's exhibit come to life.

Edit: I should never say "I'm fairly knowledgeable.." about this or anything. Makes me sound like a complete asshole. I just meant...much moreso than the average joe sixpack dvd buyer. But I'm always willing to learn more and I welcome being corrected on stuff because being right isn't as important to me as KNOWING what's right so, if I'm wrong about something...I definitely want to know that too..

Hopefully! It's still technically a rumor at this point.

I can't recall if Incoherence was his short film about the high school teacher trying desperately to keep his porn mag a secret from his students.

Why does Blu-ray.com say Godzilla 2014 is coming out on 4K TODAY? But with no link to Amazon or anything? Surely that's an error..

Reply
Yeah that's an error. It is supposed to be coming out though....but not today.
