The Expanse - Syfy

ASeason 1 should have a really good action/suspense scene in a few episodes' time. And good news on Season 2, which should have some great horrific moments in it! Hooray for sci-fi-horror-thrillers!

Just finished episode 4 and I agree it seems to know where it's going now. They were smart to release 4 episodes at once because it does really feel like one big pilot.

Here is a great behind the scenes video for episode 4 (DO NOT WATCH if you have not caught up), which among other things shows the massive work they do for the Zero-G scenes:

AI loved the 5th episode. Progress for Miller, and lots of great character moments for everyone. This was probably the first episode that allowed the characters to dominate instead of exposition.

And I have to admit that the 'Rocinante' naming scene got me emotional. But that may just be because I have read the books. Smile

AReally curious to see if they will be able to fit all of the first book in season one. It seems like they are rushing some aspects and drawing out others. I'm really digging it on its own though. I'd like them to draw some things out, especially as a way to relate to the characters more. Loved the way they've introduced Fred Johnson to the audience. There are some changes, but it really put me in the proper headspace allowing me to feel like the crew of the Rocinante.

Well, there are only 2 or 3 more episodes left this season, so...

Apparently:

Season 1 is going to end with the outbreak on Eros. Final episode of the season is titled 'Leviathan Wakes'

AThat's about what I was thinking, and it's a good idea. I do not want them to rush to meet plot points. Taking their time to set up the characters is always a good thing in my book.
Reply

That's good too because that's where the book goes from normal-seeming hard sci-fi into WTF?! sci-fi.

But in a good way.

Binged the first 7 episodes yesterday.  really good mystery.  But WTF is going on with Thomas Jane's hair?  Who thought that would be a good idea?

I'm kind of surprised they got decent actors in a SyFy show.  Didn't think they paid.

Seeing as this series supposedly takes place 200 +/- yrs in the future, I think it's a safe bet that hairstyles have 'evolved'....just as they always have.

It looks fucking stupid and to me it's a distraction.  Everyone else is "normal".  I'm sure Jane wanted to make his character look different but it's just unnecessary.

...in your opinion.

You must have hated B5 ?

No it definitely looks stupid. It's also hard to imagine it as an evolution of fashion since the haircut and his wardrobe make him look like a 45 year old PUA from 5 years ago. It's a minor thing but I find it a goofy choice.

It doesn't help that I find his stuff comparatively kinda boring. I mean the mystery is pretty interesting but whenever the show is spending a lot of time at his space station I find myself chomping at the bit to get back to the adventures of the survivors of the Cant. If it were up to me the running time wouldn't be as evenly split, it would be mostly the Rocinante with spacestation noir and Earth-based political stuff percolating in the background.

Good show overall though.

ANow that Miller and his Othercut is off Ceres, will we ever return to his two ex-partners?
Reply

If they go by the books.. yes to one, no to the other. But I will be surprised if we don't at least get a few more scenes on Ceres before the season ends.

I'm still a bit surprised that Jane's character actually gave his boss the real/only copy of the information. He seemed not to trust anyone and then he did that, so it threw me off. I'm all for following along on the ride, but that was really weird to me. I've bought the first book, so the wife and I are interested in checking it out once we're done with both of the books we're currently reading.

Wow, episode 8 certainly kicked it up a notch. Best episode so far, and nice to see two story lines finally intersecting.

It is great to see the crew now take a more active part in their investigation, and going to in the solar system to find clues. Some great space shots in this sequence:

Some great action too... Very tense and the best shootout I've seen in an SF show for a long time.

WARNING, some SPOILERS in the following clip:

ASo, are the Space Mormons the ones with the unregulated stealth tech? Or are they really not playing much of a part in this whole thing?

AThat was more the level of spaceship action I've been hankerin for.

That lobby scene was great. Everything is clicking now.

Oh how I would love the Big Bad to be batshit crazy Space Mormons but that's a bit ridiculous.

The show is definitely getting better and better. When the episode ended and the preview for next week popped up, my wife turned to me with a look of WTF?! when it showed that next week is already the season finale.  Thankfully we bought the first book, and will probably finish the series before the next season starts up.

ANot a fan of the last 2 episodes of the season. And I don't quite understand what those things are

I think the episodes had some good points, but overall yeah...could have been better.

Not to get all 'the books had this happen' but I recall there being more horror at the situation developing on Eros. I think it helped that (as I recall) in the books you had the scummy areas, but the casino floors were meant to be quite nice and appealing, so all the shit going down there was all the more incongruous and nasty.

And where were the vomit zombies?!

Reply

AYeah no vomit zombies was a kind of a head scratcher, but not a deal breaker to me. I never really liked that aspect from the books anyway. The protomolecule is nightmarish enough when you see what it did to Julie. Plus Holden and Miller vomiting all over themselves may have made for too much.

What really impressed me was how they conveyed the situation after they are blasted with radiation. I loved the desperation.

My wife and I just started this and like it so far.  Is the overall consensus that it sticks the landing?

Reply

I think the series as a whole has been pretty good and I am really looking forward to see where things are headed.

That said, those last 2 episodes sorta dragged on and the 'cliffhanger' ending was more than a little anticlimactic. I think I'll need to re-watch them.

AI think it does, but I've read the books so I know what's going on. My girlfriend has been watching with me and thinks there may be too much info to take in. She doesn't care about any of the characters, but I skipped ahead without her. The last 4 episodes have more personal character moments that I think may click for her, so I'm excited to see what she think having never read the book.

The best thing I can say about it is that it's really trying to be a hard(ish) Sci fi show and successfully pulls off all of those elements. There are some things in the finale that are going to explained to a degree next season because they really are out there concepts. So be aware of that too.

I thought it was pretty great all the way to the finish of this season.  I like the other  new sci-fi shows on SyFy as well, Dark Matter and Killljoys, but this one is my favorite. More adult I think.

I've never read the books. I was happily surprised to get to know more about Julie in the two hour finale, and am looking forward to next season.

AI'm rewatching the finale now. I unabashedly love it. It is a great way to end the first season. Next season is gonna be fucking nuts. And a long time away.

I haven't read the books yet (wife's got to the 1st book before I could so now I have to wait until she's done), but I thought the show does stick the landing for the season. It does drag a little during the last two episodes, but that may be more due to them showing both back to back instead of separated by a week's time. I will say that between this show and The Magicians, I'm impressed by Syfy. Much better than what they are normally offering.

This first season was great. I love Amos. He's so uncomplicated without feeling one dimensional.

I do wonder if they're gonna keep to the current pace. 10 seasons to get through five books seems quite ambitious. And I'm not sure if the rest of book one can support 10 more episodes unless they leap frog ahead somehow. Still, I've enjoyed it all so far.

That just seems bizarre to me. The season got better as it went along, IMO. Eps 8 and 9 were the peak of the season. I get the feeling that you expected something different - like the story being tied up more neatly.

As for not understanding "what those things are"... You are not supposed to understand (yet). They haven't told or shown us yet, it is part of the ongoing mystery that *will* be revealed. (trust me on that)

It's funny because it's the reverse problem they have with Game of Thrones. There is plenty of material in the Expanse books and they're are churned out once a year. The television show has no chance of catching up.

GoT also has a HBO budget behind it. Hopefully these new Syfy shows gain in popularity and bring an increase in budgets so they can give them some more room to tell the stories.
