The Good Place
#71

So, is the Medium Place for real, or just part of the charade? The only thing I know for (pretty much) sure is that Janet really is a Good Janet.

Definitely going to re-watch for clues. I think we all had it figured out about Chidi and Tahani being only technically 'good' people, but it was neat to see that confronted directly. I'll miss Good Eleanor.

Tahani definitely seemed superficial, but Chidi I thought was genuine.  Maybe a little misguided, but the depths of his indecision really only became clear in the last few episodes.

Tahani and Chidi mirror each other. She's all charitable action motivated by self-interest, and his saintly compulsion to do no wrong makes him incapable of actually helping anyone.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about the ending. But I love that the show is willing to try this. And I love its absurdism. It feels Douglas Adams'y to me at times.

This was a brilliant episode. It was a suitable end to the series if that's the way it turns out, a suitable setup for next season if it's renewed, and at least a partial answer to the question, "How can this premise support a show for more than one season without immense padding?"

Looking back on the season in hindsight, all the clues were pretty much there, including Danson's true nature. (He did kick a puppy into the sun...)

Hah! I forgot about kicking the puppy. haha!

I'm pretty sure the Medium Place is real. They had no way of knowing she'd make it back to the "Good" Place. She could have just stayed there, and that would throw a bit of wrench into Michael's plans. Plus, if it was a charade, why wouldn't Michael appear in the Medium Places orientation video?

The Medium Place was part of the ruse, I think.  An unsatisfying alternative to dangle in front of Eleanor while she torments herself about leaving Chidi and Tahani behind.

Possibly. But would that mean Janet wasn't acting on her own free will? And, again, if the Medium Place orientation video was part of the ruse, wouldn't Michael be the one representing the Good Place, and not that woman?

Yeah, the Medium Place was a real place. It was Janet's idea to go there, and Michael said that everything Janet was doing was 'real,' and neither Michael nor Shawn knew that that was where they went.

AFantastic. Might now be my favorite show this season. The twist definitely hangs together well.

The Medium Place was a tantalising tease, but it was a real one. Michael states later that the stuff with Jason and Janet really was an accident, and Janet was the one who suggested the Medium place. We also seem to get a look at the real architect of The Good Place in the orientation video (Though granted that can easily be handwaved away). If that whole thing was set up by Michael, they would've just stated it there and then seeing as they spelled out almost everything else.

My prediction for Season 2: Since Eleanor has been coupled with a super-hot mailman, she's not going to come clean to anyone about not belonging, and only Tahani and Jason will end up in any sort of misery, forcing Michael to reset and re-calibrate again. I could see them montaging four or five resets in the premiere before whatever the new status quo is going to be is reached.

I'm guessing Michael makes some deal with Eleanor, Chidi, etc.  to keep his failure a secret since "retirement" is apparently a real thing.   That could set up a dynamic where the fake good place really becomes the Good Place.

And I just realized that Tahani and Jason will also be separated, so nobody will be miserable.

I could see a future reveal that the whole thing is actually Michael's Bad Place, and he's being punished for some other infraction.

I want to see more of Todd, the Fire Demon next season.

AJust rewatched season. Plays totally different knowing the twist. Also, the hot mailman was foreshadowed when Eleanor hangs up a poster of him in her living room.

AAlso, wouldn't doubt it if the season begins with Michael being busted again.

Curious-- does it still play as if Eleanor's bad vibes are creating the sinkhole, making plants die, etc?

It's pretty obvious exactly why NBC made it clear no extra episodes would be ordered for the rest of the year. This storyline had to be tight and planned out from the beginning to make sure the entire thing hung together. Kudos to everyone involved for keeping the reveal a secret, not to mention having it be completely believable.

Now, this also speaks to the strength of limited series or short-season runs. With 13 episodes, The Good Place could afford to be quirky, out-of-the-norm and fresh. If it didn't connect with the audience, NBC could double-pump episodes and be done in six(-ish) weeks. But it did connect, which is the fascinating thing.

I binged this in a single day on Netflix. It was like a comedic version of THE PRISONER.

I finally caught up with this one on Netflix.  As someone who gives ethics seminars on the PG level, I was delighted to see that the showrunners had really done their homework.

All that, plus laugh-out-loud humor, plus an epic twist.  Bring on Season 2!

Just caught up with the show on Netflix and that moment was incredible. You forget how good of an actor the guy really is. Really excited to see what they do with the 2nd season.

Fantastic premier.   I was sort of right in my prediction that they would figure it out quicker this time around.   I'm guessing next week will be the 4 figuring things out over and over again.

I am confident that this show will continue to take surprising yet satisfying turns.

I think my favorite bit right now is "Real Eleanor"'s frustration with her new role.

It's that or Chidi weaseling out of decision-making.

Or it's Tahani vs. cargo pants and short people.

Or it's Jason and Janet clicking immediately.

I think what I'm saying is that I'm all in on Season 2.

Did y'all know Hulu has been putting up extended cuts (about 3-5 minutes longer) of the episodes? The trouble is they only have the last four episodes available to stream.

AI was really surprised they figured it out so quickly. I figured that would be the season arc. I now find myself delightfully clueless as to what's in store.

This episode reminded me of THE JOE SCHMO SHOW.

I do have a feeling that

we're going to find out this is actually Michael's Bad Place.
