AI'm all good, Auckland didn't get hit and I'm way above sea level so no tsunami threat and most of my friends and family down the line have checked in and are shook but fine.

I texted Andy Bain, who's in Wellington which did feel it pretty big, and haven't heard back yet but if he's out of contact at this point I assume it's due to power/cell coverage being down and/or him taking care of his kids rather than anything terrible happening to him.

ACheers all. All good. Was a mighty one though. Had us out of bed and cowering under doorframes. Havent checked damage to house.

No cell coverage (so didnt get your txt B, cheers for the thought though), buses and trains cancelled, schools closed till can be checked and advised not to go into work because of possible tsunamu risk.

Easily the biggest quake Ive felt. Seemed to go on for ever. Aftershocks what felt like every 5 minutes.

2016. What a bastard.

Cheers again for all the thoughts.

Time to check the house.

Yeah, Kaikoura is fucked.

A lot of Welly dockside is on reclaimed land (there are signs on the street telling you where the original shoreline was).  So we've had some subsidence today (bits of the port have sunk 1m)

And, as ever, some people are just the biggest arseholes in the world

Sodding tapdancing hell that was a rough night.  No damage here, but family across town decided to evacuate to high ground at about 02:30 after the tsunami warning sirens went off, so was in communication with them off and on while monitoring radio/internet until morning.  Very very tired right now.  Everyone's back home by now.

Heart goes out to those in North Canterbury and up the coast.

This is from a minute ago (and I'm not kidding there is one happening right now as I type this)

And the footage and pics of Welly CBD is mental.  Usually it's chocka at this time of day

How are the kids handling it so far Andy?

Pretty cool about it.

They've been taught the procedure (drop and cover) since day 1 of school.

Also, we live in an old villa in Welly, and the wind blows it about a lot.  Daughter last night said "that was an earthquake?  I thought it was the wind".

Its good to know Bucho and Andy are OK.

I've got good news and I've got bad news. The bad news is that I have lost my way. The good news is that I'm way ahead of schedule.

Not quite the same level but we had flash floods in Johannesburg last week that did a lot of damage. Between that and this earthquake I feel like the Earth is having a reaction to a certain US President-Elect.
