Mission Impossible 6 pre-release

It's a shame how his career pretty much tanked in the 00's while his old pals Scorsese and Spielberg went on to do a lot of significant stuff. Apparently his latest is caught up in red tape and might not even get released!

The personal movies like Femme Fatale and Passion are good films, and in their own way they show us an older and more confident De Palma. But like I said: they’re for completists only. No one without an interest in De Palma’s favorite motifs will enjoy these movies.

As for MI2 and Eyes Wide Shut, I think it’s really obvious that playing a very wealthy but oblivious man who can’t get laid made Cruise feel like he had something to prove. Throw in the bad PR surrounding his personal life, and you get the last 18 years of Cruise’s career. Personally I’m looking forward to the next phase, when Cruise is too old to pretend anymore. I’d love an MI9 about a pissed off, Scotch-guzzling Ethan Hunt. It’ll probably never happen though. Cruise will be the Mick Jagger of the movies.

So, the early word indicates that the movie is very, very good. Par for the course with early reactions, yes, but it's still nice to hear. Supposedly the practical action and stuntwork are even more insane than the trailers have given away.

Also, our former Agentsands has published a quite excellent look at the series over on his personal blog. Well worth reading for fans of these movies!

Loving how visceral this fight scene is looking:

I'm rewatching the films with my son at the moment to get ready for the next one.  I had forgotten how absolutely amazing some of the Ghost Protocol set pieces were.  They're actually difficult to watch they're so visceral.

GHOST PROTOCOL is a delight, and it was a truly impressive experience seeing it in IMAX.

still bummed that Bird refuses to let home video releases of the movie feature the shifting aspect ratios!

The original Mission Impossible has this one camera sequence involving a spiral staircase and Hunt, in an increasingly fractured and frenzied state, navigating up the stairs while the camera rotates.

It's a pretty great shot and indicative of the surprising care that De Palma put into the product (admittedly, I appreciated it far more on a rewatch).

So Film Twitter has fuckin' exploded over this:

"MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE FALLOUT is the rare true direct sequel in this series. And we learn the most about Ethan Hunt. It’s the SKYFALL of M:I movies. Also, yes, it’s insanely exhilarating."

"The MVP of #MissionImpossibleFallout is Henry Cavill’s mustache. Runner up by a hair is Henry Cavill, who levels up in star power. That dashing bastard runs away with Tom Cruise’s movie!"

I am so ready for a well made thriller that isn't a comic book movie or sci-fi.

Just pre-ordered my Imax tickets for opening night. I'll finally get around to seeing it. There will be a lot to unpack.

Guys, this looks like every other Mission Impossible movie. Which is fine, I guess.

Yeah, excuse some of us for getting excited for a movie on a movie-centric board.

I'm just taken aback by folks' excitement. Usually you guys treat every movie like homework for a class you hate.

That's really not the vibe I get at all, though obviously I can only speak for the threads I've participated in.

Reviews are calling this the action movie of the year:

Quote:Does Cruise have a death wish? I don’t feel too comfortable pathologizing him. That being said, he wouldn’t do these stunts if he wasn’t comfortable with the idea of dying for the sake of a film. He was over a hundred stories off the ground when he climbed the Burj Khalifa in Ghost Protocol. Any more than a handful of stories, he said, and you’re dead no matter what. I don’t know if he fancies himself a Christ figure, but he sure seems to want to die for us. He likes to refer to the Mission: Impossible series as just “Mission.” Would that make him a missionary?

In some ways, Cruise is the perfect tonic to the post-movie-star world we live in. While he’s part of a large franchise, it’s one of the few that markets itself on something besides simple brand recognition. He’s figured out a way to attract moviegoers that isn’t just cynical regurgitation of recognizable images. To see a Mission: Impossible movie is to glimpse a better—not perfect, but better—modern Hollywood cinema.

Movie stardom is dead. Long live Tom Cruise.

Just finished a re-watch of the first five films and this really has become the premier American action franchise. The last three entries are just top-notch stuff.

The IMAX screenings here in Singapore are all in 3D (And i hate 3D).

I have a regular screening on Monday, then seeing it in BIG IMAX on Friday with friends... then again with family on Saturday.

None in 3D. I don't think the IMAX versions are being presented in 3D around here. Just the standard showings.

I'm thinking about giving Part 2 another spin before I see the new one. In honor of nooj.
