The Man in the Moon (1991)
(Not to be confused with MAN ON THE MOON, the Andy Kauffman biopic starring Jim Carrey.)

This is Robert Mulligan's final film and Reese Witherspoon's first.  It's a quality coming-of-age drama that is sweet and sincere without indulging in the overly sentimental trappings that prevent most films of the genre from reaching this level.  Has any director been better at portraying bucolic settings or finding young talent?

I have been making a point of going through Mulligan's filmography.  It's due for re-assessment.  While he has always been respected for TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, he does not get the credit he deserves for the rest of his catalogue.  Diverse, well-crafted, and interesting films with a distinct lack of hacky gimmicks too often confused with pedestrianism.
