too many words to say “you’re awesome, ambler!”

scrivened, eh?

very specific word choice!

Mandy.

How weird of a connection is that?

Man, thanks for that.  I'm a fan of brevity, which is becoming a lost art.  I really do try and make longer videos because people seem to like that, but most of the time I say everything that needs to be said in under 10 minutes.  It just feels right and I don't pad the run time.

It sucks because youtube now prioritizes videos over 10 minutes.  This is part of the reason for the bloat explosion.

Always thought of Excalibur more as a 70s movie than 80s.

Well, the writing and pre-production was in 1978-1979 (though it was filmed in early 1980) so it kinda is!

**Ambler, I had no idea about youtube prioritizing bloat.  Goddamn ...

RE: The return of Ambler: New Youtube Channel - Bucho - 11-20-2020

I blame Joe Rogan.

RE: The return of Ambler: New Youtube Channel - Nooj - 11-21-2020

unless he’s being sarcastic, I’m surprised olord wasn’t aware of the YouTube platform/algorithm prioritizing longer runtimes for longer engagements

I could’ve sworn the topic has come up several times on discord

the medium is the message, milord!

With leftover locations from the Lord Of The Rings film he never got to make.

Yep, and test footage shot for the visuals and overall look.

Would kill to see that footage, if it still exists. To pull off the Hobbits, they used small children but dubbed by adults. Knowing Boorman, he probably used his own kids as guinea pigs.

Still can't get over how beautiful his daughter is in Excalibur.

RE: The return of Ambler: New Youtube Channel - ambler - 11-25-2020

New vid up!  Total Recall was the first R-rated movie I saw in a theater as a kid.  And I snuck out of my church group's showing of Ghost to do so (RIP Patrick Swayze).  A transgressive act for a transgressive movie... and it happens to be the subject of my latest.  Please subscribe if you enjoy my content!

My god, Rob Bottin's FX are missed.

RE: The return of Ambler: New Youtube Channel - Nooj - 11-25-2020

the 4K UHD is coming out soon!

RE: The return of Ambler: New Youtube Channel - commodorejohn - 11-25-2020

The late '80s-early '90s truly was a time of wonders for practical FX.

RE: The return of Ambler: New Youtube Channel - ambler - 11-25-2020

A friend of mine suggested my videos need music so it doesn't sound like I'm giving a lecture... what do you guys think? I kind of like how its silent and just my voice, but I'm open to alternative ways of doing it.

RE: The return of Ambler: New Youtube Channel - commodorejohn - 11-25-2020

You should just do brooding, ambient Twin Peaks drones.

RE: The return of Ambler: New Youtube Channel - hammerhead - 11-25-2020

A light drum riff might be the thing. Nothing too intrusive.

RE: The return of Ambler: New Youtube Channel - Nooj - 11-25-2020

I mean, I like that it’s a lecture

instead of someone forcing affability on me!

If there are moments where music kicking in or slowly fading in helps in the effect, I say go for it.

But just wallpapering music over your soothing voice to make it feel more approachable? Ehhhh

RE: The return of Ambler: New Youtube Channel - commodorejohn - 11-25-2020

I do kinda get the notion - not so much because there needs to be peppy muzak as because, the way it stands, it's very sonically flat. Your delivery isn't bad, and the recording quality's alright, but there's no ambient noise to fill the space between words/sentences/etc. - not even the basic subliminal cues we get from a normal acoustic environment. That's better than annoying or distracting noise, of course, but it still sounds weird to a human brain conditioned for that stuff.

RE: The return of Ambler: New Youtube Channel - Bucho - 11-25-2020

It might make the videos more palatable to The Masses but I really dig the current music-free style, and I say this as someone who chose to lay a continuous music bed under my own podcast.

Really looking forward to your Ghost episode by the way.

RE: The return of Ambler: New Youtube Channel - commodorejohn - 11-25-2020

Just loop a sample of Star Trek bridge noises under there.

RE: The return of Ambler: New Youtube Channel - ambler - 11-25-2020

Haha, you guys never fail to disappoint. I'll throw some light coffee shop hip-fi on the next one and see what happens.

RE: The return of Ambler: New Youtube Channel - hammerhead - 11-25-2020

Beatnik bongos.

RE: The return of Ambler: New Youtube Channel - commodorejohn - 11-25-2020

Zen-garden ambient New Age CDs from the mid-'90s.

RE: The return of Ambler: New Youtube Channel - Jones - 11-26-2020

Wailing sax!!

RE: The return of Ambler: New Youtube Channel - ambler - 12-02-2020

A friend suggested I start putting music in my videos, so here is my first attempt... with a film that awed but frustrated me at the same time.  Tenet is not only Nolan's most complex film, it's his least accessible.  And it's indicative of the state of the movie business right now... all that and more in my latest film essay.  Please subscribe and share if you enjoy my content.  Thanks.

Solid take. I do hope, for my own sake at least, that theatres have more of a future than you predict. True, home video has managed to surpass the average cinema in terms of convenience, expense, and comfort. As for presentation I suspect that the tradeoffs are about equal, given that said convenience may result in people watching big-budget spectacles on their phones and/or in stop-start chunks. It's the audience experience that remains irreproduceable-- at this point will people even realize they're missing it?.

I think the background music does help warm things up. This particular track, though, has a distracting drumbeat that sounds a little too much like glitches in the voice recording.

Appreciate the comments.  I think it's easy to realize the background music is drum beats and not glitches in my voice, since you yourself seem to acknowledge it.  It'll be interesting to hear more comments about the music.

Snazzy opening with music, sure.  I recommend the bass beat from Seven Nation Army and some splashy graphical branding.

Also, include snippets of girls jumping on trampolines.

RE: The return of Ambler: New Youtube Channel - ambler - 12-02-2020

Do you guys think I voice my videos in a monotone? Somebody said I should add more inflection, pacing and emotion if I want to grow my user base. I don't think I speak in a monotone, just a little more evenhanded than normal and there are inflections in my voice. But I'd like some honest feedback.

RE: The return of Ambler: New Youtube Channel - commodorejohn - 12-02-2020

A little more emphasis could help, maybe. But you definitely don't want to go to the other extreme and turn into the aural equivalent of those mugging douchebros in every YT promo still.

The problem I have is the equivocation between vocal inflection and channel success... I see alot of YT analysis videos delivered in a fairly flat voice with tons of views and subscribers.  I don't think I have a flat voice to be clear, just trying to give the comment I got its due and try and figure out if the criticism has any merit.

This guy have a pretty successful channel and his voice has this fairly flat sound to it:

I think your inflection is fine.

Just don't be like this guy who grunt-swallows the last word of every fucking phrase:
