Star Wars IX: The Rise of Skywalker - A "pain without end" Overlord discussion thread

This generation’s iteration on Star Wars has still been worth it, if only for Rogue One.

Well, the overall creative direction has been essentially:

Well, Rian Johnson pretty much torpedoed all the plots that JJ left him after TFA to make up his own, so why should JJ be blamed for trying to put the pieces back together in TROS? JJ Abrams wasn't the one who decided to destroy Kylo's helmet; it was Rian who did it. JJ has no obligation to follow up anything from TLJ.

And yes, this trilogy has became a joke because of it, but I blame Kennedy for not having a cohesive vision for the trilogy and just let the directors do whatever he wants.

Rogue One, particularly its second half, at this point is by far my fave Disney Wars film.

I watch it, and it *feels* like Star Wars.

You like SO MANY THINGS I CRITICIZE!

All the time with you I'm ranting and you're like "it was fine by me!" But the VADER scene you don't like?? It can't be because it's a fan service thing, these Disney movies are nothing BUT fan service. The execution is wonderful.

I just don't GET YOU sometimes!

Other than the fact that he's, y'know, making a sequel to The Last Jedi.

NO. You can't hate the Vader Massacre, I won't accept that!

"Does STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER trailer confirm time travel?"

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-v...el-1201824

It's part of the official canon now. How could J.J. resist?
Reply
Barry, thanks for the legwork, but you know what "24 hour" means, right?
Reply
Yeah, I get it, but unfortunately I don't have access to the "World Between Worlds" (a.k.a. the method by which one can time travel in STAR WARS canon) to see what it was at the 24 hour mark. The 36 hour (give or take) view counts will have to do.

What was the source for your low view count post? Was it just your own observations? The numbers on the official Star Wars YouTube channel and Facebook page don't tell the whole story.

I guess Kylo has turned into a werewookie by that point in the film and needs it because he's feeling self-conscious.

Damn, his twitter feed is SAVAGE. I would just stay off twitter.

"my favorite part is that you are not directing the movie"

And I refuse to believe that Rian Johnson LOVES the shot of Kylo reforging the helmet.

It's actually a space monkey doing the Kintsugi repair, FYI.

No. There's literally a new character in this who's a monkey.

I like RedLetterMedia, but I stopped watching any of their Star Wars stuff after they gushed about TFA before self-consciously turning up the cynicism to 11 for Rogue One and resuming normal service.

God forbid the continuation of a series with six films and umpteen beloved characters includes some of those characters. VII and VIII have balanced the new characters' screentime and importance with the old extremely well, and with far, far more restraint than they needed to.

EDIT: Erm, I may have jumped to conclusions about what the video was complaining about. I will say that picking holes in a statement about death that has a clear, life-affirming message is as fucking inane as pretending you don't get that 'We're going to win saving what we love not fighting what we hate' is meant to be about one's mindset and values and having altruistic motivations, not military strategy.

So far, agreed that ROGUE ONE remains the best thing about the nuStar Wars films. Especially the second half. INCLUDING THE VADER MASSACRE.

I've softened towards the trailer, after doing some reading and back-and-forth with erstwhile Citizen Bartelby. Still not THRILLED with it (and the potentially for - ahem - walking back most of what RJ did in the excellent TLJ) but not feeling as harsh.

Knowing it's JJ, it's literally just "because we liked the look."

JJ isn't known for brilliant and inspired character beats.
Reply
I imagine Kylo will spend most of the time unmasked, with the helmet used for one or two key action moments - y'know, where a helmet would be a worthwhile safety precaution. Bear in mind that in his previous Star Wars film, J.J. had Kylo take the mask off for the entire climax.

I don't buy into this 'J.J.'s passive aggressively making a dig at Rian Johnson - what a hack/what a legend!' BS (same goes for 'This will begin to make things right'). I think he liked the mask, but I imagine the film will honour that beat from VIII by not having it featured 24/7.

That Red Letter Media video makes its point about thirty seconds in. Then goes on for another four minutes.

So on brand for them, I suppose.
Just this guy, you know?

Drag that mother back in here, wouldja? We've had entire conversations about Star Trek Into Darkness where he hasn't shown up to plug his book, and that's just wrong.

Probably not gonna happen. I know he's been active on the Discord channel.
