Attack or Defend This Statement

If a new poster uses his/her first post to start a thread, they will be trouble.

Depends on what that thread is about. A lot of new posters start intro threads. Not all of them are as brazenly "LOOK AT ME!" like Fabfunk's or "I LIKE TO PRETEND!" like TwilightVampire's, but there have been plenty of nice intro threads.

Hard to say. Sometimes its easier to start a new conversation rather than jump into an existing conversation with established players. As JGB says, I suppose it depends on the content.

They'll either be

a) opinionated, which applies to most of the regulars here, or

b) posting in the Sex forum, or

c) a shill.

The amount of trouble is directly proportional to the number of times Devin or Millette post in the initial thread. Get them both in there and the newbie has definitely started something they can't handle.

I think it depends on whether your first post is competant (I can't spell this word!) or not. An intro thread is fine if you want to be friendly, but it is still a pointless idea. I first posted in an ongoing thread (which I can't remember) as an alternative.

Usually but if they make a shit thread, get shit for it, and learn from that experience, they can become a productive member of the boards.

Well, it's not really intro threads I'm talking about, just starting a thread as your first post. The extreme example of this would be coming on with a manifesto about why mindless action movies are better than art house films, or a rant about how the prequels sucked, or something (usually using a lot of exclamation points and bolded or capitalized phrases), but even if it's just...oh, just for the sake of argument, let's say "list your favorite sleeper films"...I guess it just says to me that this is a person who is interested in being heard, as opposed to participating in a conversation.

Wee just for the sake of semantics an intro thread is starting a thread as your first post.

But, onto your point, if someone's first post is a thread revolving around a negatively written, hate-filled diatribe on why, say, Batman Begins is so much better than Doom, then yeah, they're self-indulgent windbags. But like the sleeper movie guy, I think he's just trying to start a conversation. I don't see anything inherently wrong with that.

My first post was a dissertation on what I thought the underlying psychological content of Bubba Ho-Tep was. I'm still embarassed by it. I'm with those who think it depends on the content. Again, I'm still embarassed by mine.

I was assuming that by "intro threads," we meant those where someone starts a thread just to introduce themselves in the Chewer forum. "Hi, my name is..."

But yeah, you're right, there's nothing inherently wrong with starting a thread with your first post (and I didn't really want to pick on the sleeper guy), but just as a generalization, I think there's something about doing that, as opposed to coming in to an existing thread, that says "trouble." I'm probably being a dick at this point, but I started it, so I guess I need to follow it through.

I don't think it really matters what your first post is. If you make an ass out of yourself, you're gonna get ambushed with negativity and cynicism.

I prefer to call it good clean fun.

It's fun, no doubt. Clean? That depends if there's bodily fluids and dead flesh involved in the proceedings.

My first post was in the Episode 3 thread and I promptly got my ass kicked by that Rottenjesus guy. Remember him? I thought he was important, so the fact he flamed me made me feel pretty unwelcome. But I got over it.

Some of the people here can be quite unwelcoming of newbies, especially lately. Quite a bit of bad sentiment gets flung around. I think some of us take this whole thing way too seriously.

Maybe more could be done to let new folk know the 'rules' so to speak. Stuff like using the search function, posting threads in the right forum, etc. Maybe we could start a thread with tips for newbies?

You should have "Saddened that my first fucking post was about The Matrix" in your sig. Cause that would be hilarious. Really.

I can't remember what my first post was about. Either TPM or FOTR, I'd imagine.

My first post was a thread. Yes, I was a "thread-starter." On top of that, it was to get help figuring out a movie that I saw as a child and forgotten about. So it was a double whammy, a first-post thread and a "help me find this movie" thread. This was three years ago, however, so everyone was kind and helpful and we all had some fun. Can't imagine what would happen if I started a thread like that now. I was stumping them for a while, but we figured it out.

Oh, and what was the movie? Sky Bandits. I think I'm one of three people who has seen it, and survived.
